Iraqi Soccer Team Defeats Australia, Just One Win From Olympic Medal!
Incredibly, Iraq One Win From Soccer Medal
Posted by: Editor on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 10:58 AM

"By JOSEPH WHITE
AP Sports Writer

IRAKLION, Greece - Emad Mohammed's 12-yard bicycle kick in the 64th minute gave Iraq a 1-0 victory over Australia in the men's soccer quarterfinals Saturday, putting the invaded, war-torn country in position to compete for only its second Olympic medal in the nation's history.

Iraq will play Paraguay,
which defeated South Korea (news - web sites) 3-2, in the semifinals in Thessaloniki on Tuesday.

Iraqi coach Adnan Hamad couldn't complete more than a few sentences without his cell phone ringing. His team is one step away from an improbable trip to the medal podium, and he was more than happy to spread the word to a country in dire need of good news."

I've been watching the Iraqi team play on TV. Boy, those guys sure are intensely MOTIVATED!

1. Yes, and remember the Iraqi soccer players are all good neoconservatives
And I'm sure they just adore Bush and are so grateful to him for "liberating" their country.

4. Exactly right.
They have said they don't want Bush to use them for his political gain.
And other not so kind things too.

6. Really Bluestateguy? Is that why one of them said he would be working
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 10:09 PM by Cheswick
for the resistance if he were not on the team?
Please forget the Kerry campaign for a moment and be happy for the people of Iraq who have some reason to feel a bit of pride this week. Not everything is about winning an election.

8. You should not be so sure of things that are wrong
Those among them that have spoken are opposed to the occupation. One even has martyred family in the Resistance and would be alongside them if not for the soccer team.

It was amusing to see cons turn on a dime after that article came out! A few days before--wishing them the best and suggesting they fly joint US-Iraqi flags.. A few days after--wanting them all shot.

13. Of course, it was obvious
Those people should be ashamed of themselves to not see that! Of course I noticed ... or not.

14. It was obvious to me
bluestateguy, you have to understand, people will believe anything they read on the internet. even sarcasm. oh, and irony? too ironic.

Even the claim that an Iraqi can be a neoconservative, since I am sure that there are several nationals in that country that share that idealogy, numbering in the single digits . Recent converts, of course;)

3. Pretty amazing!
Did the other countries field amateurs or does natural talent rise above all?

7. The Iraqi Amateurs are making a better showing than the U.S. Pros
On our nightmare basketball team full of egotistical over-paid professionals who can't play TOGETHER.

10. Why do people report what Drudge is reporting
Instead of just reporting what's going on?

17. It's karma
Remember this score?

Australia 31- American Samoa 0 . Perhaps they should've saved a goal or two for the Iraqis 3 years later eh?

Just pulling your chain rooboy, I know this aint the same bunch. But man, 31-0?
