NYTimes: Friendly Fire: The Birth of an Anti-Kerry Ad
After weeks of taking fire over veterans' accusations that he had lied about his Vietnam service record to win medals and build a political career, Senator John Kerry shot back yesterday, calling those statements categorically false and branding the people behind them tools of the Bush campaign.

2. NYT does more than repeat the slander
But on close examination, the accounts of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth' prove to be riddled with inconsistencies. In many cases, material offered as proof by these veterans is undercut by official Navy records and the men's own statements.

Several of those now declaring Mr. Kerry "unfit" had lavished praise on him, some as recently as last year.

26. Of course he never rejected it at the time. He greedily took it.
If he had no idea of how he got it, and he accepted it, then it shows his greediness. Now that he denies the facts, he cheapens all the medals given to Vietnam Veterans, NOT. He really cheapens himself.

He is an opportunist. He opportunisticly accepted it back then. He opportunisticly denies it now.

When his memory was fresh more than 30 years ago, he accepted it.

They use the bronze star to bolster his credibility--but outside of the ad, he says he didn't deserve it because we were able to get a hold of his citation--which he refused to release and the Post had to FOIA--geez, theses guys are scum.

49. No surprise -- these are the same people who tried to destroy Clinton
Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 11:25 PM by starroute
Ken Starr is a friend of Alfred Regnery. Regnery's publishing house is the source of the Swiftboat Liars' book. And Richard Mellon Scaife is probably lurking somewhee behind it all:

"-- In a February 1 CNN Impact story, Kathy Slobogin charged: 'Finally, there is the Clinton’s arch nemesis Ken Starr. His links to Clinton detractors? He agreed to write a brief in the Paula Jones case. Once appointed independent counsel his law firm dropped the case. A year ago he almost took an academic job funded by millionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, a relentless Clinton opponent. And Starr is a friend of Alfred Regnery, publisher of many Clinton attack books....'

"-- A February 8 CBS Evening News story transcribed by MRC analyst Steve Kaminski.

"Anchor John Roberts: 'It was Hillary Rodham Clinton who first charged a right-wing conspiracy is out to get her husband. When asked who the main conspirator is, the President’s supporters keep coming up with one name in particular. Rita Braver tells us about the mystery man on the right.'

"Rita Braver: 'This is rare video tape of one of the conservative movement’s biggest and most private money men, Richard Scaife. He’s introducing one of his heroes -- House Speaker Newt Gingrich....Liberals say it is Scaife who is really the behind the scenes ideological warrior.' "

When asked if she had ever visited the White House during Mr. Bush's tenure, Ms. Spaeth initially said that she had been there only once, in 2002, when Kenneth Starr gave her a personal tour. But this week Ms. Spaeth acknowledged that she had spent an hour in the Old Executive Office Building, part of the White House complex, in the spring of 2003, giving Mr. Bush's chief economic adviser, Stephen Friedman, public speaking advice. Asked if it was possible that she had worked with other administration officials, Ms. Spaeth said, "The answer is 'no,' unless you refresh my memory.''

OK, so is McCain going to finally stop touring with the shrub?

Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 09:49 PM by rumguy
She produced those tinhorn phony ads against McCain in 2000.

"n 2000, Ms. Spaeth was spokeswoman for a group that ran $2 million worth of ads attacking Senator John McCain's environmental record and lauding Mr. Bush's in crucial states during their fierce primary battle. The group called itself Republicans for Clean Air, but was later found to consist only of a prominent Texas supporter of Mr. Bush, Sam Wyly."

She formed a front group called "Republicans for Clean Air" - oh god the irony is almost hilarious! How long did this little group last? What all did it accomplish? Did they even give a rat's ass about clean air?

29. Marginally more honest than the Swiftboat Liars ...
Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 10:11 PM by TahitiNut
... at least "Republicans for Clean Air" have registered as lobbyists and (truthfully) proclaimed themselves as a "Republican/Conservative" ideological group ... NOT an evironmental lobbyist. Sadly, neither the presstitutes nor the sheeple look beyond the hypocritcal title.

RfCA spent $120,000 in 2000, and nothing before then. That's clearly because they were targeting Gore's environmental record.

They used the (new) lobbying firm of Jay Velasquez, who also was retained by Deloitte & Touche ($120K), Freddie Mac ($260K), Interactive Brokers $60K), Investment Co Institute ($60K), Mortgage Bankers Assn of America ($20K), Mortgage Insurance Companies of America ($40K), and Visa USA ($80K). That's quite a cast of characters, to say the least - totalling $780K.

It looks to me like Jay left his employer (the lobbying firm Williams & Jensen, where he handled Reuters) and started his own operation ... most likely just fronting (laundering money) for Republicans running the McCain attack ads. These are filthy little gangsters who've hijacked the Republican Party.

40. More dirt on "Republicans for Clean Air"
Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 10:59 PM by starroute
I went looking in my files for Sam Wyly and found I'd saved this piece from the 2000 campaign:

"New York's Republican primary is a tight race with McCain and Bush virtually tied. McCain needs a victory there on Tuesday to keep his candidacy alive, while a defeat jeopardizes his chances. This past Thursday his campaign was more than a little upset when the New York media was suddenly deluged by ads attacking John McCain's environmental record, sponsored by a group called 'Republicans for Clean Air.'

<snip>

"In response to the ads, the McCain campaign filed a complaint with the FCC about the anonymity of Republicans for Clean Air, and some television stations expressed concern about its sudden appearance in a closely contested race. On Friday the financial backers of Republicans for Clean Air stepped forward to identify themselves as Charles and Sam Wyly, investment bankers from Texas. They announced that they had purchased 2.5 million in ads in California, Ohio, and New York.

"The Wyly brothers are well known in Texas, though not for environmental issues, having donated $210,273 to Bush's gubernatorial campaign. Charles Wyly is a Bush 'pioneer,' one of an elite group that raised $100,000 for the Governor for his presidential campaign.

<snip>

"Such close connections arouse suspicion that Republicans for Clean Air are connected to the Bush campaign, which would be illegal under campaign finance laws. Appearing on CBS, Bush defended his supporters: 'That's part of the American process. That's what free speech is about. The allegation that I'm somehow involved with this is just ridiculous. It's uncalled for. There is no truth to it.' "

22. O'Neill lied on PBS tonight!
Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 09:59 PM by rumguy

I specifically remember him saying that there was NO DAMAGE from gunfire to any of the swift boats the day Kerry saved Rassman's life.

This is from the article - "A damage report to Mr. Thurlow's boat shows that it received three bullet holes that day, suggesting enemy fire, and later intelligence reports indicate that one Vietcong was killed in action and five others wounded, reaffirming the presence of an enemy. "

I ask: how much longer can the media allow them to get away with such blatant lies?

I want these sick lying fucks chopped up into little pieces and I want the stinking remains hung around *'s neck for the whole world to see.

77. You have a valid point, especially since we've seen the Bush technique.
Bush can prance around feigning virtue and claim that he has condemned all soft money ads, and he can send his press secretary, Scott McClellan out to lie through his teeth that Bush never focused on Kerry's past record (Bush most certainly does bring up the past, in every campaign speech).

They can run all the attack ads they want, but they will never admit to running a negative campaign, lying, being incorrect about anything, or being anything less than wholesome, virtuous, and untainted by special interests. While we at DU know those are all phoney claims, Bush has tended to get away with this sort of thing in the past.

The only good news is that A) Kerry is not taking this lying down and B) the GOP links have been produced via the New York Times and C) the inaccuracies/false claims have been pointed out by both the Washington Post and the New York Times.

What we have to do now is catch them on every new trick they have -- i.e., claiming that Kerry brought this on himself because he's overemphasized his military service, that Kerry's service wasn't long enough and he wasn't wounded enough and even if he did receive several medals, one is suspect, etc. I even hear these talking points from Democrats.

NO. Do not assume that the public will be able to sort the dirty campaign message from reality. The Bush campaigns in 1988 and 2000 got away with attacks, and the media and electorate pretty much went along, from what I can see. We have to make this round different.

Yes, there's a danger we'll all be sick of it. But there are fingerprints this time, and we should be able to toss it back in Bush's face.

31. Here's a biggie - Rassman recommended Kerry for the Silver Star.
"For his actions that day, I recommended John for the Silver Star, our country's third highest award for bravery under fire. I learned only this past January that the Navy awarded John the Bronze Star with Combat V for his valor. The citation for this award, signed by the Commander of U.S. Naval Forces, Vietnam, Vice Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, read, "Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry's calmness, professionalism and great personal courage under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." To this day I am grateful to John Kerry for saving my life. And to this day I still believe that he deserved the Silver Star for his courage."

That Thurlow guy kept saying it was Kerry.

Thanks for posting this chart, rm. I would have missed it otherwise.

The idea is terrific. It will need repeating a million times daily on DU to make it work, though.

74. Better Idea
I made a bunch of copies of the cover of the book "Deserter: George Bush's War on Military Families, Veterans, and His Past" and placed them strategically in the book, and in somes cases, over the cover of the book at my local book store.

Since I am in a wing-nut central San Jaquin Valley town 30 miles south of Rim Job, I wonder what the reaction will be.

Hey....can someone tell me how to post a picture in my posts. I would love to provide a copy of the Deserter picture. Show's Georgie in his flight suit with the word DESERTER in yellow over the picture. I think the yellow is a nice touch.

50. The article mentions Corsi briefly here:
>>The book outlining the veterans' charges, "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against Kerry," has also come under fire. It is published by Regnery, a conservative company that has published numerous books critical of Democrats, and written by Mr. O'Neill and Jerome R. Corsi, who was identified on the book jacket as a Harvard Ph.D. and the author of many books and articles. But Mr. Corsi also acknowledged that he has been a contributor of anti-Catholic, anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic comments to a right-wing Web site. He said he regretted those comments.<<

76. Yes, and O'Neill,
the weasel that he is, tried to distance himself from Corsi when his freeper background and comments became well known, referring to his old buddy as "simply an editor and not really any sort of co-author."

Funny, I have seen a lot of O'Neill's face in the media, but where is Corsi? He's the CO-AUTHOR of the book!

61. Section from Matthews-Thurlow Interview..
MATTHEWS: ... the Bronze Star. The Bronze Star, that you deserve the Bronze Star, you were awarded the Bronze Star, fair enough, and you say you were not under enemy fire. You‘re now saying that John Kerry doesn‘t deserve the Bronze Start because he wasn‘t under enemy fire. Aren‘t you both in the same boat? Didn‘t you both do about the same thing, both get same award? And why are you complaining that he doesn‘t deserve it, if you deserved it?

THURLOW: I felt like I got the award because I saved some people‘s lives and saved the boat. What I say...

MATTHEWS: Well, he saved Rassmann‘s life, according to Rassmann‘s own account.

THURLOW: OK...MATTHEWS: Why doesn‘t he deserve the award?

THURLOW: Well, I—I don‘t—I‘m not quibbling about the award.

I‘m saying he lied about the...

MATTHEWS: Oh, yes, you are, sir!

THURLOW: ... account.

MATTHEWS: You are out here in an advertisement saying, quote, “When the chips were down, you could not count on John Kerry.”

THURLOW: That‘s exactly right.

MATTHEWS: That‘s a pretty strong—because of what are you saying this?

THURLOW: Because he had this master plan that was...

MATTHEWS: You got—give me an example.

THURLOW: ... to promote his...

MATTHEWS: OK, let‘s to go your theory of the plan. Have you seen it written down? Have you heard him tell his account to someone? How do you know, in any real way, he had this plan?

THURLOW: Because of the fact that he engineered three Purple Heart incidences that allowed him to go home after he spent about one third of his tour there.

MATTHEWS: But that‘s your account of what happened. He was there for four months.

THURLOW: That‘s exactly right.

MATTHEWS: He did win the three Purple Hearts. He did get the Bronze and the Silver. And you say he had some plan to get an award as a battle hero ahead of time, but you can‘t tell me how you know he had this plan.

THURLOW: I know he had this plan because of what happened not only then but after the fact.

MATTHEWS: Did you have a plan to win the Bronze Star? You won the Bronze Star. Did you have a plan?

THURLOW: No, in fact, I didn‘t...

MATTHEWS: Why is winning the Bronze Star...

THURLOW: I didn‘t apply for it.

MATTHEWS: Why is winning the Bronze Star evidence of having had a plan to win one? I don‘t get it.

THURLOW: Well, I—we‘re not even talking about him having a plan to win the Bronze Star.

MATTHEWS: Can you honestly tell me now, sir, that you could swear in open court that you know that John Kerry, when he was a lieutenant JG in the same theater you were in had some plan for winning medals? Do you know that for a fact?

THURLOW: OK. In other words, present evidence that he had this plan?

MATTHEWS: Yes.

THURLOW: Of course, I couldn‘t.

MATTHEWS: Well, what...

THURLOW: I‘m basing it on my observations.

65. Matthews was brilliant!
He maneuvered this moron into saying that *Bush (i.e. someone who hadn't served) shouldn't use these charges about Kerry in his campaign because he didn't have personal experience of the attacks. Matthews then nailed him by saying then how can you say Kerry had a plan to become a war hero when you don't have personal experience of the plan.

It was a masterful takedown

83. Smear Boat Sinking
The two public perps should become household names. John E. O'Neil was recruited by Nixon White House crook Charles Colson to smear the war hero turned war protestor Kerry. The "co-author" merits this from the NYT:

The book outlining the veterans' charges, "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against Kerry," has also come under fire. It is published by Regnery, a conservative company that has published numerous books critical of Democrats, and written by Mr. O'Neill and Jerome R. Corsi, who was identified on the book jacket as a Harvard Ph.D. and the author of many books and articles. But Mr. Corsi also acknowledged that he has been a contributor of anti-Catholic, anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic comments to a right-wing Web site. He said he regretted those comments.

Hey, Bush! Leavenworth's callin'!
