Moore turns temperature up on Bush with DVD date for 'Fahrenheit'
Santa Fe New Mexican

LOS ANGELES - President George W. Bush will face a home-video barrage four weeks before the election: "Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore's assault on Bush's handling of the Sept. 11 attacks, debuts on DVD and videotape Oct. 5.

The announcement Tuesday confirmed Moore's initial intention to have the film out shortly before Election Day, a time frame the director favored since May's Cannes Film Festival, where "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the top honor. ..

Among DVD extras will be a featurette examining the release of "Fahrenheit 9/11," which lost its theatrical distributor last spring after Disney refused to let subsidiary Miramax handle the film because of its political content. Miramax bosses Harvey and Bob Weinstein bought back the film and lined up distribution through Lions Gate and IFC Films.

Also featured on the DVD will be:

_ Deleted footage that includes a scene outside Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, where seven U.S. soldiers have been charged with abusing Iraqi prisoners.

_ Coverage of Lila Lipscomb _ the mother of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq, who was featured prominently in "Fahrenheit 9/11" _ at the film's premiere in Washington.

_ An examination of the acts and experiences of Arab-American comedians after the Sept. 11 attacks.

2. Unfortunately It Will Only Be Available...
at 2 stores :eyes:. Joking aside, does anyone want to bet that at-least Wal-Mart and it's affiliates refuse to carry the movie?

6. Don't Give Him Any Ideas, But...
he (they) could locate it in the "adult" section. That way the people who ask will have access but the casual browser would never see it.

31. My guess is that their business $ense will win out.
I remember the local theater owner rubbing his hands together with a half-crazed smile when I went to see F911. My guess is that guy was a republican, a greedy rethug with a lust for money that supercedes all political ideology.

19. Right-wing disruptions at Blockbuster
It seems that bushbackers might try a couple of tricks to keep the film from being seen by many at video stores, and since you work at blockbuster I wonder if you have any ideas on how to combat such tactics. For one, I think they could remove the DVD and place it elsewhere in the store, so that it gets "lost" and people can't rent that copy. For another if they have the moviepass thing (I don't know if it's nationwide, but we have them here), they could check the movie out and then just keep it until after the election, thus taking that copy out of circulation.

Any way to prevent this? (Or am I just being paranoid?)

20. I won't let them
As for the "lost" copies- since I work in a medium-sized NY (Upstate) store, I can pretty much guarantee that we'll carry between 25-40 rental DVD's (a few less than that number VHS copies, due to the VHS format being less-popular these days)- hard to "lose" so many of them (and each night, the aisles are "tapped", meaning employees go around and make sure the movies are in their proper spots, all lined up nicely). As for the movie pass, yeah that COULD happen, but not likely at all. Again, due to us potentially carrying so many copies. And I also doubt that even the most ardent wing-nut would be willing to pay $30 just so they can keep 3 (out of our potential 25-40) copies of the movie at their house for a month. Could it be "all rented out" for a weekend or two? Absolutely, I'm almost sure it will be. But that will be due to me recommending it to everybody. :)

22. Good to hear
I feel better now. :)

I know I've got some reliable lefties at the Blockbuster I use, too, so I'm sure the aisles will be well protected. I talked about the movie with a couple of them before it came to the screen, and a few also rented the documentaries "Fog of War" and "Weather Underground" at about the same time I did. Anyway, I'm just glad it's coming out before the election.

11. They won't repeat Disney's mistake.
Wal-Mart won't pass on the money to be made. Sure, they'll turn around and donate it to a repuke campaign or something (they sure as shit won't pay any workers with it), but by then, who cares? The word is out, the damage done.

13. "Wal-Mart Nixes 'Uncovered"
http://www.alternet.org/mediaculture/2004/03/001818.html

<SNIP>
If you're looking to buy a copy of Robert Greenwald's superb documentary, "Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War," don't go to your local Wal-Mart. Anderson Merchandising, the company that picks the movies that are sold in the retail chain, has told the distributor of the movie that the film is inappropriate for Wal-Mart.
</SNIP>

They have done this with CD's as well. I bet you didn't even know about it. Thats the sinister part.

25. Seconded!
I've bought a bunch of DVDs for my local library, including "Bowling for Columbine", "Journeys with George", "The Fog of War", and "Elephant". If you're concerned about your donation being turned down -- a lot of libraries are hurting for funds, and are VERY grateful to get DVDs because those things can cost upwards of $20 each and are in high demand! (Often they can't afford to get copies for 8-10 branches, so they have to share ... if one branch doesn't want "political" stuff, the chances are that another one will snatch it up.)

Also -- if you give a whole batch of movies, including "G" and "PG" ones -- it doesn't look like you're some wild-eyed radical any more. I've also been selecting new releases by people like Johnny Depp, Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Ed Asner, Martin Sheen ... a library board member would have to be pretty picky to turn down "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Hudsucker Proxy"! My last donation consisted of "Secret Window", "The Muppet Movie", "Canadian Bacon", and a Noam Chomsky lecture on DVD. They took ALL of them without blinking an eye.

I'm planning on giving them TWO copies of F 9/11 (one for the branch that services the area near the military base). A lot of people there can't even afford to rent DVDs, their budgets are so tight -- this way they can see it for free. Too bad the release date for Will Ferrell's "Elf" isn't until November, or I'd give them that as well.

7. The Director's Special "El pResidente Cut"
I was hoping Moore would have added a bonus "Trading with the Enemy" featurette showing how Republican war profiteers, led by Dick Cheney, have no qualms about making $ on wars.

16. The hell with the experiences of the comedians, add something like
all the sources used for the facts in the film. Its going to be scrutinized even more than the film so it needs to be a complete package IMO.

21. Too late for many unregistered (non)voters
So many states require registration early. Illinois, for instance, is 27 days or more prior to the election.

Imagine someone who's never voted and is not registered, watching it just out of curiosity on, say, October 15. They're so outraged that the next day they go try to get registered, and find out that they still can't vote in the election. Tragic.

Still, I'm thrilled that it's coming out before the election since Moore said at one time it might not be. I hope it will get a lot of registered voters who hadn't planned on voting off their butts on election day.
