WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 2004--Republican William Bennett and Democrat Howard Dean will debate opposing political ideologies and key election issues on Thursday, September 30, in Portland, Maine, as part of the upcoming Fall Conference of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).

The unique debate, titled "The Maine Event," begins at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn By the Bay and pits together two of the nation's most powerful political voices in a rare no-holds barred debate on contrasting party philosophy, and their views of what issues will impact who America chooses as President.

The debate will precede the nation's first Presidential election debate between President George W. Bush and challenger Senator John Kerry, scheduled for later that evening.

2. "Not Playing With A Full Deck" Bennett?
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 10:53 AM by rocknation
It doesn't matter HOW much money you have--if you're gambling away an average of $800,000 PER YEAR and defining it as "relaxation," you're not playing with a full deck!!!

3. Howard will stand The Gambler on his head
Just read the speech he gave after the passage of civil unions in VT and you learn that he possesses a morality that will overwhelm that phony with its depth, strength and sensitivity.

17. Gambler???? Give me a fucking breaking !
This guy is a shot machine degenerate, a mental masturbation artist at his very best.

Howard Dean will turn Bill Bennett into three sour lemons and then flush him down the toilet. And to think Bennett was the first drug czar.

Bennett does strut around like he some kind of an emperor. Emperor of the slot world, the biggest sucker that isn't ashamed that he blew tens of thousands on a one arm bandit.

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((gong)))))))))))))))))))))))

Sit down Mr. William Bennett on your old rusty dusty

10. "Surrogate" debates - interesting idea, but there are dangers.
The idea of fleshing out the political discourse during a campaign season with platform-clash debates of this type seems appealing, I’d have to agree. Democrats don’t usually get a forum like this to promote our ideas, esp. in the current ideological climate. With a good, passionate speaker, the natural appeal of progressive political views tends to sway most fair minded to the left. There are some troubling ways this can be abused, however.

First thing that comes to mind is the format can be used to limit the number of actual candidate debates. While I would love to see one of these every week with different high profile representatives for each side taking turns, it could easily be made as a sort of proxy for actual Presidential appearances. I can see Bush esp. doing this to avoid uncontrolled exposure to hostile questions.

Another possible problem is the position of authority from which each of the individuals speaks. When a sitting President or the challenger asks or answers a question they will have the power to act on that issue and also the burden of responsibly for its failure. There is a level of accountability in this.

A surrogate debate, esp. if handled in a biased manner, provides only a shadow of accountability. If some idea or the general performance of a particular person goes over very well, it can be adopted wholesale with great effect. However, in the event of a poor reception at one of these debates, a President can simply claim “I didn’t say that, this person doesn’t even work for me. We have differing views in the GOP, it’s a big tent party”.

Last but not least, it’s easy to rig these events. Fox News, anyone?

Now, all that being said, Dean will kick his butt.

14. Why is Dean wasting his time with this turkey?
It is almost undignified for him to even be seen with somebody like this. Bennett is a discredited windbag with mental illness, hardly a worthy opponent in a gentlemanly debate.

16. Howard had better brush up
Bennett is a gas bag, but he is the kind of gas bag that right wing engineers appreciate.

Dean wasn't very impressive at all against Nader, who had his number: one-time firebrand turned agreeable establishment tool. If you caught the convention coverage on PBS, even the milquetoast Lehrer was able to rub Dean's nose in it.

18. I agree about the need for preparation
Bennett has proven himself to be unburdened by any scruples, and apparently uninterested in maintaining any kind of credibility. That makes him dangerous.

Howard should not go in expecting a normal debate. He should be ready for every trick in the book.
