Family of Iraq Abuse Whistleblower Threatened

1 hour, 1 minute ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Relatives of the U.S. soldier who sounded the alarm about abuse of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison said on Monday the family was living in protective custody because of death threats against them.

Reservist military police officer Staff Sgt. Joseph Darby alerted U.S. Army investigators about the abuse by fellow soldiers of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, a move his wife says has angered people in their community in western Maryland.

"People were mean, saying he was a walking dead man, he was walking around with a bull's eye on his head. It was scary," said Bernadette Darby from Corriganville, Maryland.

9. Not a scary thought, merely the reality of our Orwellian situation
Probably it won't happen, but it sure could with little to no media "scrutiny" (or what passes for it in the Klown Korps these days.

3. Proof
Of the raw-nerve this event has touched in the American psyche.

Also the fact that we live amongst a bunch lynch-mob mentality minded mobsters: Kill the messenger sheeple who are afraid of their own shadows.

America needs more citizen-soldiers like Darby. Be encouraged Mr. Darby, some of us are very proud that you did your duty and alerted us to the evil.

7. A line from "Gangs of New York" stayed with me
"You can always count on half of the poor people to beat up the other half."

Seems to apply here.

6. Death threats against a kid who is decent, moral, and told the truth
says a lot to me about what a f*cked up country we live in..and how anyone who would try and hurt this young man or his family are insane..truly cruel and insane..
how sad this is..how horribly sad. God, something is so wrong with so many people in the US...their denial is beyond comprehension.

10. Failure of moral leadership- corruption from the top down
It is such a shame that we have so many right wing political and religious and military leaders from the top down whose messages of revenge and hate have resonated with so many Americans.

11. This is Fascism plain and simple!
The worship of militarism and chauvism are its trademarks. Those that believe in the rule of law and blow the whistle on criminal behaviour, are quickly tagged as enemies.

We better take a good look at ourselves! How do we blind ourselves to reality when we go into one of those "support the troops" tirades?

15. Bull
These people have always been that way, they were just looking for an excuse to allow their true beliefs to come to the surface.

The leadership of this country does not guide the morals of individual Americans, these people were already corrupt and evil, all they needed was a reason, and 9/11 gave it to them, along with Reverend Falwell's little tirade

I think the guy is a hero, but that's because I believe in doing the right thing, no matter what the cost. Those that are making threats
probably have never believed in doing what was right, unless there was some way that they could profit from it.

13. Darby is a hero!
These people should congratulate him for doing the right thing and obeying the rules of war! They should be proud he stopped the torture! I remember reading that some locals were raising money to defend the accused torturers instead of condeming their actions.

14. This is how Amurikans treat boat-rockers.
The vast majority of "freedom-loving" Amurikans offer no support for whistle-blowers. On the job, they're lepers. Even "good 'lihbruls'" are more than able to portray them as "difficult to work with" and other specious rationales for running like hell.

Believe it.
