Russian Scientists Claim Discovery of Alien Spaceship Wreck in Siberia
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 09:22 AM by Beetwasher
MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian scientists claim to have discovered the wreck of an alien device at the site of an unexplained explosion in Siberia almost a hundred years ago, the Interfax news agency reported.

I think I'd wait for a bit more independent verification on this. The article is scant on details. *sniff* I smell a hoax.

Some background info about the original incident

Tunguska Incident
By Dave Hawksett

On 30 June 1908, 2,100 square kilometres (800 square miles) of forest were devastated by a mysterious fireball, which originated over a desolate region in Siberia. The night sky was lit by an eerie glow for days over a vast area. In western Europe, people were able to read newspapers at night without lights. Indications of the cause had been recorded on seismographs in Irkutsk, Siberia, which pointed to an earthquake 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) north of the city in a remote area called Tunguska.

It was not until 19 years after the explosion that Leonid Kulik, the founder of Russian meteorite science, organised the first scientific expedition to the site, spurred on by reports from Tungus nomads of fallen and burned trees. Suspecting the culprit to be a large meteorite, Kulik's expedition began a search in Tunguska for a large crater containing a huge meteorite, but all they found were millions of dead trees, lying flat and pointing in the same direction away from the original blast. Kulik followed the dead trees until he came to a low depression around a mile across. This was the epicentre of the blast.

27. OTOH, they would make it public if they wanted to boost tourism
Maybe they could have a two-for-one special: Stop in Scotland to see Nessie, and then on to Russia to see the crashed UFO.

History note: UFOs use to be called Flying Saucers. That's because some wise guys would toss an aluminum pie tin thru the air and photograph it, with some guys with a dumb-ass looks on their faces pointing at it.

Airbrush it, and palm it off as a photo of a UFO in the distance.

15. This is Pretty Funny
I believe this is taken from the following Pravda article:

Explorers find UFO fragments in Tunguska meteorite area

Members of the scientific expedition of the Siberian state foundation Tunguska Space Phenomenon say they have managed to uncover blocks of an extraterrestrial technical device. The space body, which was later called the Tunguska meteorite, fell down on Earth on June 30th 1908, 65 kilometers off the Vanavara settlement, the Evenkiya

---snip

The press service of the Evenkiya republic administration reported the expedition worked in the western part of the region in the summer of the current year. The mission's itinerary was based on the results of the space footage analysis. Explorers believe they have discovered blocks of an extraterrestrial technical device, which crashed down on Earth on June 30th, 1908. In addition, expedition members found the so-called "deer" - the stone, which Tunguska eyewitnesses repeatedly mentioned in their stories. Explorers delivered a 50-kilogram piece of the stone to the city of Krasnoyarsk to be studied and analyzed.

Pravda's almost as bad as American tabloids these days (samples below). I'm just surprised the story made its way into Yahoo.

25. Oct 4, 1955: Senator Richard Russell sees a UFO in the Soviet Union.
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 10:06 AM by Minstrel Boy
Cribbed from Richard Dolan's excellent "UFOs and the National Security State," page 181:

"One of the key UFO sightings of the year involved US Senator Richard Russell (D-Georgia), head of the Senate Armed Services Committee, during a trip to the Soviet Union on October 4, 1955. Russell was on a Soviet train from Kiev and passing through the Transcaucusus region. He was accompanied by Armed Services Committee consultant Ruben Efron and Lt Col E.U. Hathaway. Shortly after 7 pm, Russell looked out his window to see a disc-shaped object slowly ascending vertically. Its outer surface revolved slowly to the right, and a spark or flame emanated from the bottom. It reached an altitude of about six thousand feet, then headed north at a very fast speed. Russell rushed over to tell his two companions. Hathaway looked quickly enough to see the UFO; Efron missed it. To everyone's astonishment, a second disc then appeared about two minutes later and performed exactly the same maneuver as the first. This time all three men saw it. A distraught Soviet trainman then closed the curtains of the car, and directed the three not to look outside.

"The report went past Blue Book to much higher levels.... Aviation reporter Tom Towers tried to get the details from Russell, but received no response. After Towers tried again, Russell replied on January 17, 1956: 'I have discussed this matter with the affected agencies of the government, and they are of the opinion that it is not wise to publicize this matter at this time.'

"The matter was classified Top Secret until 1959 and remained Secret until 1985 when Stanton Friedman was able to get it declassified following a FOIA request. Interview notes about the sighting stated: 'There were two lights toward the inside of the disc, which remained stationary as the outer surface went around.... The aircraft was round, resembling a flying saucer.'"

Anyone who wants a dispassionate look at the evidence, including evidence of cover-up, should pick up Dolan's book. Also, he has a blog that's worth checking out: http://keyholepublishing.com/index.html . Here's an excerpt from his latest essay, "The Real Wonderland":

"Another person I know – someone who is a fairly well-known celebrity in Western New York State – had a UFO sighting in May of 1980, just outside Syracuse. It was late afternoon on a sunny day. Driving with a friend, in the small town of Manlius, this person asked his companion if she could see the large object outside her window.

"She answered, 'I’m really glad you mentioned that, because I didn’t know what I was going to tell you.'

"According to this person (who also never reported his sighting to any organization), he and his companion got out of the car and watched what he described as 'right out of a Steven Spielberg movie.' It was a classic flying saucer. Silent, hovering over trees, 'as large as a football field.' It has rotating lights around the perimeter – red, green, and yellow, as he recalled. The object wasn’t doing anything – merely hovering silently and impossibly in broad daylight.

...

"The kicker of the story is this. He was sure that this would be on the T.V. news that night, and stayed up till 11 p.m., specifically to hear the much anticipated report about a massive UFO seen just outside Syracuse. But not only was there no story on any UFO, but it seemed to him as though the talking heads in Wonderland went out of their way to downplay anything odd at all. The new announcer actually said, 'another boring day in Syracuse.'

...

"In Wonderland, reality is upside down. Living in this world is like living on a nonstop LSD trip, in which the 'reality' we are being fed bears little to no resemblance to the actual experiences of people. In Wonderland, UFOs are imaginary."
http://keyholepublishing.com/The_Real_Wonderland.htm

I don't know about Tunguska. In fact, I rather doubt it. I'd think the area would have been picked clean by Soviet-era scientists, and a genuine discovery would promptly be declared a state secret. But I wonder if scoffers told Senator Russell and his companions they were seeing swamp gas, or Venus, or a weather balloon?

39. State funding for science must be very low in Russia
However, they still seem to have enough vodka in Siberia, judging from these comments:

"One scientist said based on his calculations, the mass of the space object headed for Earth in 1908 was nearly 1 billion tons. He believes the meteorite was blasted by the spaceship at an altitude of 10 kilometers to prevent the destruction of all humanity on the planet.

"I am fully confident and I can make an official statement that we were saved by some forces of a superior civilization," Yuri Lavbin said. "They exploded this enormous meteorite that headed towards us with enormous speed," he said. Now this great object that caused the meteorite to explode is found at last. We will continue our research, he said."

56. A joke I heard from a Russian, about extraterrestrials in Russia
Alien ship lands in Russia, alien disguised as human sees two Russians opening a bottle of vodka. (Usually a bottle of vodka is shared by three, in Russia). They invite the alien to join, he drinks and passes out. Goes back to his ship, and the captain says, "Go back and try again. You must talk to the Earthlings and find out about their culture!" He goes back the next day, same thing happens, two Russians get him drunk. He tries again on the third day, the Russians offer him vodka, and the alien shouts:
"NO! You don't understand! I'm an alien from outer space, and I'm trying to discover your Earthling culture!"
And the Russians looked at each other and said:
"Alright, no more vodka for him."
:-)

58. I'm sure many will scoff at this...
...and this claim probably won't pan out. However, I've always had an interest in this stuff. When I was a child, I saw a "flying saucer" up close. It hovered over me in my backyard, in broad daylight, for several minutes before taking off in a brilliant blue light. No, it wasn't a dream, and no, I'm not crazy (if I was, I'd probably be a Republican).

I guess you could say the experience gave me an open mind about everything from a very young age (despite scaring the bejeesus out of me when it happened).

65. Yeah, I heard about that
I've seen UFOs in New Mexico, Louisiana, and more recently in Ceará, Brasil. I was walking on the beach at night when a little light in the sky was moving at a good clip and then made a right angle. My grandfather, a WWII vet, worked in Los Alamos in the centrifuge during the time they built the bomb. He saw colored lights/UFOs doing figure eights above or near the lab. I guess, "they" were watching us work on the atomic bomb.

:hi:

66. Karl Rove knows that this type of tabloid journalism is popular
with most nuts and will take attention away from the real issues of the day. By 10:00 this morning will thread will have at least 150 hit and will still be going strong. With the trolls egging on the stupidity.

69. Intriguing
Absurd that anything could be immediately determined alien, but reading further in it looks like a story turned inside out by some intrepid misreporting. The main interest for research is claimed to be a black rock, an exciting enough meteorite find. Curiously the speculative, wild claim seems to be secondary to the scientists- or whatever these- as usual- unnamed parties are.

Someone needing attention and funding perhaps.

The story is ridiculously written.
