First Lady Bashes Kerry Stem Cell Stance
LANGHORNE, Pa. - First lady Laura Bush defended her husband's policy on embryonic stem cell research Monday, calling Democratic rival John Kerry (news - web sites)'s criticism "ridiculous" and accusing proponents of overstating the potential for medical breakthroughs.

"We don't even know that stem cell research will provide cures for anything — much less that it's very close" to yielding major advances, Mrs. Bush said.

There you have it from one of the great minds of the 21st century.

stem cell research may cure your lack of brains. You may even become productive and independent.

3. We also didn't KNOW that the Wright brother's ...
motorized glider would actually fly, but the evidence pointed in that direction. I agree with you though, when a great mind like Laura Bush announces such things, we should all abandon our false visions and listen (sarcasm off, but soon to be turned back on with a vengeance).

27. Precisely!
Science depends on experimentation. But what do you expect from the incurious, dogmatic wife of an incurious and dogmatic president?

9. Jebus will heal 'em!
Them Bushes ain't real big on that fancy "science" stuff. Just give 'em that ol' time religion! (insert vomiting sound)

It's kind of ironic (or just plain fucked up) that Bush has such a hard-on on for embryonic goo but has no problem fire-bombing real live babies in Iraq.

I need a drink.

Have you been sleeping? They don't know yet becuase your cheney-head husband of yours is holding up the research that will tell you wether or not it works for sure. Stupid Stupid STUPID stepford wife!

21. Uh, Laura-
that's what research is for-to see what works and what doesn't. See, the scientists have an idea that the stem-cell research might lead to a cure (or better methods of treatment) for some very serious diseases. The scientists won't know whether or not it will work if they don't get to do research, get it, Laura? Maybe you should stop talking to your husband, it seems to be making you stupid.

12. This just makes me tired.
I'm fed to the teeth with the brainless pronouncements that come from this maladministration -- and its followers. On NPR a woman gushed today, "George W. Bush is my hero! I'm happy just to be in the same room with him."

If I could, I'd ask that woman "why is he your hero?" I can guarantee you that li'l ol' me, who is far too emotional to be any good at such mano a mano discussions, could blow away whatever answer this vapid silhouette of a woman could offer.

I will be thrilled to have an administration that believes in science once again! (And then my neighbor (whom I love, BTW) can just weep while he removes his bumper sticker "you can't be a catholic and pro-abortion." Folks like this will have their convictions to comfort them and nothing more.)

19. Then Why Do It At All?
I mean, if stem cell research is all bunk, why fund it at all Mrs. Bush?

Then again, this administration's commitment to science is more than a little questionable. It surprises me that Dubya is so hot to get to Mars, considering how he doesn't really believe in science.

22. What a stupid ignorant *****
There are already major advances in medicine due to stem cell research, some of them are just now going on to human clinical trials. The best example is the use of stem cells to re-grow teeth pioneered by UK scientists (along with dozens of expatriot US scientist who moved there to continue their work without being fettered by US laws): http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3679313.stm.

As I said in some other forum, you know there is something very wrong when the British are advancing the field of dentistry.

24. Let's have Teresa hold the rebuttal to this one...that would be classic &
then she could introduce Nancy Reagan and get her opinion on the matter out to the media...

I watched this speech and while I'll give Pickles credit for speaking better than Bu$h (which isn't too hard) I now know she is as stupid as her husband....

Teresa has so much class and brains, that it would be embaressing for Laura to hear what Mama T's thoughts on the issue are....

36. Letter I sent to the Miami Herald this AM:
"Yesterday, our librarian/teacher/first lady Laura Bush said that we don't know if stem cell research "will provide cures for anything." If everyone followed her husband's "lead" we would never know.
Fortunately, stem cell research is currently being carried out in private companies and in other countries. Scientific discovery starts with "don't know." It cannot be stopped. You would think a teacher would know that."

I was so angry, I was unable to finish breakfast. My father died of complications of Parkinson's. At least once a week I dream that a cure had been discovered in time and that he's still alive. When I wake up it's like he just died all over again.

I really hate these people.
