Edwards Heads Back to Kansas to Apologize for Snub
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Reuters) - Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards (news - web sites) was to head to Lawrence, Kansas, on Sunday to offer an apology for an inadvertent snub by presidential hopeful John Kerry (news - web sites) and himself.

The two rolled through the town shortly past midnight on Saturday on their campaign train without saying hello or goodbye to an unexpected crowd of more than 1,500 supporters lined up beside the tracks to see them.

To make amends, the campaign juggled its schedule so Edwards could return to Lawrence on Sunday while Kerry resumes the train trip through New Mexico on to Arizona.
...
Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, in a web log posted on the Kerry Internet site, wrote they were surprised by the show of support and want to return to Lawrence to express their appreciation.

"We had no news of any crowds waiting for us as we sped in the darkness through Kansas," she explained in the web log.

Sad that they missed them but it's very cool to go back. It's an important gesture.

3. What makes this so important...
Is the fact that Kerry and Edwards know they will lose the state of Kansas but Edwards went back anyway, pulling part of the ticket away from states that are in play like Arizona and New Mexico.

To me this action says this is an administration that will work for the entire country, not just the blue states like bush* did with the red ones. Remember how the current administration let California burn?

These are good men who will work for a better America.

4. yup, and it wasn't a true "snub" since they had no idea people were there
at first i thought they didn't go to an event that they had planned. but it's just that they didn't expect people to show up. but when they found out about it Edwards goes back . Kerry should go some day himself also.

7. Douglas County (where Lawrence is located) went to Gore in 2000.
It was one of only two counties in Kansas that went Blue. So, the whole train passing by actually is a snub at an area where Kerry/Edwards could easily pick up good amounts of donations and supporters.

A very, very wise move to go back! Also, Nader polls well in Douglas County, so it's best not to anger enough people to start sending in donations to Nader.

This type of gesture is exactly why Kerry/Edwards will be light years better than...I won't even say his name...

18. A snub, after midnight ? Come on.
But I'm glad John and Elizabeth are going back. Her little story about Lawrence on the blog was wonderful. I hope she keeps writing. she is great at it.

8. Unfortunate subject line....
They were taken quite by surprise by the crowd, and the train was going too fast to be able to do a "roll through". Elizabeth E.'s blog entry makes it clear that there was no "snub".

9. You're right. A lot of people read only headlines unless they're grabbed
right off the bat, and retain only the info. passed on in a few words.

Using emotionally intense words like "snub" is irresponsible in cases when the act is inadvertent.

10. "So we awoke ... scrambling to find a way ..."
"So we awoke ... scrambling to find a way to show Lawrence the same affection it had shown us."

You can bet doghnuts to dollars Bush and Cheney wouldn't have done this. Hell, at that hour Bush the man child would have already been tucked into bed and been read his bedtime story by Pickles.

11. So, the people in the heartland want change, too
they're not all for bush and his agenda. If I listen to the media, it's telling me that Kerry had no bounce after the convention, that people were tiring of his message. But in Kansas, smack dab in the middle of this country, there is a crowd of 1,500 supporters gathered after midnight to see them. Who'da thunk it? That's his bounce right there.

It's great that Edwards is going back--see, that's how one can tell he's connecting with the people; he's letting them know they've been heard. I think that's what a lot of us have been wanting from our government for a long, long time. It's a good, good move all around for the esteem of this ticket.

13. Secret service estimates 22,000 in KC
to see Kerry. I don't know if you've ever seen it, but Union Station sits just north of the liberty memorial. There is a lawn from the north side of the memorial that runs to the street. Union station's parking lot was packed full, and the crowd went back up the hillside. It's estimated to be the biggest crowd yet.

19. It was so exciting to see, and to watch David Helling reporting
Helling, a news anchor in Kansas City followed them through Missouri, and at times, he seemed to be elated. Edwards has brought a ton of energy to this campaign. I just love watching him.
