Former first lady Nancy Reagan supports Bush re-election
Former first lady Nancy Reagan supports Bush re-election

JEFF WILSON

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - While Nancy Reagan disagrees with President Bush's stance on limiting stem-cell research, the former first lady Nancy Reagan strongly endorses Bush's re-election bid.

"She's in full and complete support of President Bush's candidacy," Reagan spokeswoman Joanne Drake said Tuesday. "The campaign is certainly about more than one issue."

Mrs. Reagan, whose public appearances have been limited since the death of her husband two months ago, won't be attending the Republican National Convention in New York this month, Drake said. But the former first lady hasn't ruled out campaigning for Bush.

"She's taking it one day at a time right now. We'll see," Drake said. "She will certainly want to help but there are no plans right now."

1. Well, I'll give this more credibilty than Capitol Hill Blue
which didn't name one identified source in their entire article stating that Nancy had basically told the RNC to piss off.

I never believed that Nancy wasn't going to support Bush just because of one issue.

6. So Much For That Hope
One of the reasons i wanted to be a doctor (though i later changed my mind after nine years of hospital work) was reading her stepdad's book "A Surgeon's Odyssey" many years ago. I was hoping recently that maybe some brain cells had been reactivated in the old gal and she'd distanced herself from the White House Mafia. Oh, well. She's apparently just a selfish, idiotic, UnAmerican moran after all.

7. Wonder what they threated her with?
Has Ron Jr. said anything??? If Nancy said this she has lost whatever respect she might have gained for the stem cell position.

12. She probably said something just to get them off of her back.
They've been pleading and begging for some time now.

21. Will certain dems that
were praising her when they thought she told the RNC to go Cheney themselves now start calling her filthy names? Everyone wants to make a big deal about this but she is what she is. I don't think she's ever been a huge fan of the RNC, but she definately has conservative leanings in some areas. Just like Ron, while getting him to speak at our convention says something, it's not like we converted a hardcore conservative to our side with the strength of our message, Ron's always been at odds with many of the repukes and even his father's policies.

8. I doubt it
Her son, Ron, just wrote a five page anti-Bush piece in Esquire. I don't see Nancy undermining that. Besides, she is in mourning. The last thing on her mind is the Chimp.

28. Ron Reagan was really good on Leno last night
I don't think he'll be rooting for Bush's "election" anytime soon!
Ron is really sharp and spontaneous.

11. I don't see it as good or bad.. we each have our own voice
and freedom (so far anyway) to vote how we please. If she did this willingly without any threats and will full knowledge of the facts and with a clean conscious, then my hat's off to her!

If not then I pity her.

15. She isn't going to say anything that is inflammatory. Why should
she cause herself any trouble during this period of time in her life.
Anyone can say maybe I will campaign for him lets see how I'm feeling.
The bottom line will be whether or not she actually does something or justifiably begs off because she is in mourning.

This may be the best that could be hoped for, given the partisan realities.

18. This doesn't really discount the CHB story..
.. just because someone says privately that they don't like Bush, and just because someone calls Ed Gillespie, and tells them not to use those commercials.. does NOT mean that a person wouldn't still support the Bush presidency.

She may say, through her spokesperson, that she supports Bush's re-election.. but couldn't that be a lot like some people in the Democratic Party who are not supportive of Kerry, but are voting along Party lines to support the Party?

I'm sure she is still a Republican. And, I'm sure she still feels that what she's doing (no matter how illogical it seems) is what Ronnie would have wanted, ultimately. He was a republican.. through and through. I find it so odd that stem cell research has pretty much been the dominating force in her life for years and years, and now she does an about face and issues a statement that it's "not about one issue". I frankly wonder sometimes if she's afraid of fucking up the legacy of Saint Reagan with the Republicans... Wierd that it took so long for her to make this statement, too. I think there was definitely some back-room meetings to get her to do this publicly.

20. This is a non issue
She is 80+ years old has been out of politics for 15 years. She is being gracious by supporting Bush as most former first ladies would. No need to get down on her and start calling her vicious names.

I remember Ron saying something once to the effect that she likes things to be nice. That's why she denied Cindy Adams' piece that said she calls * "the village idiot."

just like to be able free to fly in a private plane now and then and not suffer the same fate as Wellstone.
