Bush Backers Greet Edwards in Louisiana
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: August 3, 2004

Filed at 1:42 p.m. ET

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Vice presidential candidate John Edwards praised running mate John Kerry and never directly criticized their Republican opponents while campaigning Tuesday in Louisiana, a heavily Democratic state their party lost in 2000.

``The truth is he spent his life serving and fighting for this country,'' Edwards said of Kerry. ``While others stood by, he stood up for fiscal responsibility.''

Edwards had to shout at times to be heard over supporters of President Bush when he spoke at a rally at the Old State Capitol on the Mississippi River, the first of three stops in a daylong tour of Louisiana. Across the street, about four dozen Bush supporters shouted ``Four more years!'' and waved signs saying ``Flush the Johns.''

Edwards echoed his ``two Americas'' speech, arguing that ``we shouldn't have two different economies in this country -- one for families that are taken care of for life, one for families that aren't.''<snip>

the rally? The article didn't say. The "supporters" of Bushco are showing themselves to be the vicious cretins they are.

But WHY do the GOP protestors NOT get herded into 'First Amendment Zones' where Democratic Candidates have rallies, ... while Democratic protestors ARE forced to stay within the narrow confines of a 'pen' whenever GOP candidates have their rallies ....

?????

Tell me: why this discepency ? ...

12. Because Imperial Amerika is a very Soviet Place
Oh, if the Soviets had to tolerate dissent it would have been JUST like this.

Communist Hecklers -- allowed to do as they please when they please

Anti-=Communist Hecklers -- herded behind fences miles away, brutalized if they dared to cirumvent the Protest Zones or even wander a foot beyond designated boundaries

This is NOTHING NEW.

Totalitarian Nations like Imperial Amerika have been doing business this way since before Totalitarianism was invented (they called it the Divine Right fo Kings prior to the Invention of Totalitarianism)

25. this is easy - there would
B more squatter protestors than supporters, so they have 2 keep them out of the camera's angle.

Many, many years ago I went 2 a Bob Hope USO show on Guam. Only uniformed personnel were allowed 2 sit w/i camera range. Everyone else was steered 2 bleachers out of range. There were 5 times as many people, military families, non-uniformed guests, etc. but it was not recorded so it never happened I guess.

5. why is it....
that every time there is a Bush protestor, or a Clinton protestor, or a Hillary protestor, they get top billing in every news article or televised segment.
But thousands -- if not millions -- of anti-Bush protestors practically have to set themselves on fire to gain the media's attention -- and even then, are mocked?
Seriously, what the "Johns" need to do is point out to their audience (and the attendant media) that this sort of thing happens in a free and open democracy where dissenters are given are voice. This sort of thing CAN NOT happen when Bush or Cheney appear somewhere, hiding behind hordes of policemen and addressing only invited guests who pass the party and race tests.
I am SO SICK of this ---
CALL THEM ON IT, dammit! This is getting ridiculous!

9. all we can do is call them on it
soo---where is everyone?

I am sick of it also.

He would never have been allowed to bully us the way he has if he were challenged on it at the first by patriots. Seems we had few.

He got away with it and continues to get away with it. Outright lies, simply accepted and written down in the notebook and reported with a favorable twist to Bush in spite of the obvious. IN fact, the media ends up being as delusional as Bush.

It is a tragedy--one of the many that has driven this country into fascism over the past four years.

It is really frustrating to have NO ONE answer to him. Feeling abandoned is not exactly the greatest motivation to support anyone.

It would be amusing for either of the Johns to have a camera zoom in on the hecklers so that everyone can see what losers they are.

Edit: Any standup comic worth the cover charge has plenty of nasty zingers ready for hecklers.

16. bingo!
we have a winner!

because the media is crafted to reflect a false picture of our reality, in which "balance" means state control.

turn it off. stop buying the papers and reading from their sites. "mainstream news" is wholly propaganda these days; it makes no sense to pay for it on top of that.

i was near the back, and i could hear them only a little. it didn't interfere with edwards' speech. there weren't actually that many of them, though they all yelled their little hearts out for their fearless leader.

anyway, much ado about nothing. this is baton rouge, for chrissakes. i'm surprised there weren't more of them. they numbered maybe thirty or so. the "four dozen" cited in the nyt article is a bit... er... "optimistic."

If these rude protesters did the same thing to Bush.

Of course, Bush has his "freedom of speech" zones.

Incredible how the Republican party is continuing to set new standards for low.

18. From the Baton Rouge newspaper:
http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/080304/new_edwardsbr001.shtml

Vice presidential nominee John Edwards had to shout over the cheers of about a thousand boisterous supporters, and the jeers of a few dozen opponents, as he delivered his familiar "two America's" campaign speech in Baton Rouge this morning.

His rally at the Old State Capitol on the Mississippi River kicked off a daylong tour that would take him from southeastern to northwestern Louisiana. He lavishly praised his running mate, fellow Democratic Sen. John Kerry, never directly criticizing or even mentioning the names of Republican incumbents George Bush and Dick Cheney.

"We shouldn't have two different economies in this country: one for families that are taken care of for life, one for families that aren't," Edwards said in remarks echoing his address to last week's Democratic National Convention.

Across the street from the lawn of the old Capitol building, about four dozen Bush supporters shouted "Four more years," and waved signs saying "Flush the Johns."

Gov. Kathleen Blanco introduced Edwards and his wife Elizabeth.

24. Wow.. "four dozen" people. 50?
Gosh, I thought Bush had 6 million volunteers signed up on his website??? All they could muster is 50, and all they could come up with is "FLUSH THE JOHNS"? Those people are just soooo clever! Not. I didn't notice any mention of how big Edward's crowd was.

Notice that whenever they talk about Bush's appearances, all they talk about is what he said, etc. WHenever they report on Kerry or Edwards' appearances, there is ALWAYS some sort of negative to it???

27. The reason protesters are showing up
is because unlike the Bush campaign. Kerry/Edwards don't require loyalty pledges to attend their events. If anyone was allowed to show up, there would be more denouncers than supporters at their rallies and they know this hence the loyalty pledges.

31. There was a rather casually enforced ticket requirement to get
in the gates. But, they didn't even look at mine, I just flashed the paper. The protesters (protesting against our right to the democratic process, I guess, since I don't know what else they could be protesting about. It's not like Kerry is in the WH or anything) were across the street. They were nearby nonetheless.

BTW, I like your avatar. I actually have that sticker on my car.

29. Before the rally, Bush supporters told the media to expect 1,000...
... anti-Edwards, pro-Bush demonstrators at the rally, according to Judy Woodruff on CNN's Inside Politics.

Judy reported, "Before the Edwards rally, the Bush campaign alerted the media that 1,000 pro-Bush demonstrators would appear to support the president and show their disdain for Senator Edwards. However, only 50 showed up."

Interesting...
