U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, starting a three-day trip to six states, said the U.S. will "vanquish" the al-Qaeda terrorists.

Speaking at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Cheney cited the Sept. 11 commission's report that said, "this is, quite simply, an enemy we must vanquish."

"Vanquish them, we will," Cheney said in a speech thanking military personnel for their service. Colorado Springs is the home of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which provides missile defense for North America, and the U.S. Northern Command, which provides military support at events such as the Super Bowl.

Cheney spoke after President George W. Bush in Washington endorsed the Sept. 11 commission's call to create a national intelligence director to oversee the Central Intelligence Agency and 14 other U.S. intelligence offices. Cheney's trip is a mix of official and campaign appearances.
