Bush-Cheney Organizer Asked Editor to Identify Staffer's Race - E & P
Paper Reveals Bush-Cheney Organizer Asked Editor to Identify Staffer's Race

NEW YORK - Racial profiling or reasonable security? President Bush's re-election campaign is under fire for insisting on learning the race of a photographer for a major daily newspaper assigned to cover Vice President Dick Cheney on Saturday.

A rally organizer for the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign in Arizona asked Teri Hayt, the Arizona Star's managing editor, to disclose the journalist's race on Friday. "It was such an outrageous request, I was personally insulted," Hayt later commented. "One has to wonder what they were going to do with that information. Because she has Indian ancestry, were they going to deny her access? I don't know."

And...

Journalists covering the president or vice president must undergo a background check and are required to provide their name, date of birth and Social Security number. "That's all anybody has been asked to provide," said Hayt.

Bush-Cheney organizer Christine Walton, according to the newspaper, told Hayt that Popat's race was necessary to enable the Secret Service to distinguish her from someone else who might have the same name. "It was a very lame excuse," Hayt said.

1. Well, it's a very common name -
There are probably lots of journalists named Mamta Popat in Arizona.
Just ask anyone.

3. This was posted in LBN yesterday.
I'm glad you brought it back up with the different source. It should be getting a lot of attention.

I have to wonder if this is just one stupid staffer or if this happens all the time and nobody else had the stones to report it.

What this story needs is repetition. That way if it has happened before, somebody might come out and say, "Yep, they asked us the same question about so-and-so." If it was a one-time thing then BC04 can let the staffer go, apologize, and we'll move on.

Oh wait, I forgot...nobody gets fired from ChimpCo for fu**ing up, only for disloyalty.

7. Stan Goff wrote that the Republican
party has become the party of the "White Supremacists".

Kinda lends some credibility to his theory, doesn't it?

8. That is a perfectly valid question coming from a Republican
honestly I would be disappointed if they did not ask for such information and the reason they gave is so apropos. I think they did a very good job of making themselves look like asses.

9. Isn't Master Dick Cheney the picture of supremacy personified?
That is how he likes to think of the relationship between himself and the rest of the world--just like George's; that is why they make such a perfect fit!

This bunch is committed only to staying in power, certainly not democracy. The end justifies the means, no matter what.
