Bank Scandal Smears Pinochet's Graft-Free Image

SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) - Chileans always gave ex-dictator Augusto Pinochet credit for keeping his hand out of the till during his bloody 17-year regime, but a new scandal over multimillion dollar bank accounts could ruin the general's corruption-free reputation.

A U.S. Senate report released in July concluded Washington, D.C.-based Riggs Bank violated money-laundering regulations by hiding up to $8 million and helping Pinochet evade international legal efforts in the 1990s to freeze his assets.

Chile's tax and securities agencies last week launched investigations into where the money came from and whether Pinochet had evaded taxes. A judge has cited Pinochet's five adult children for questioning on the accounts.

"People used to believe that Pinochet killed but he had good economic policies. The new perception is that he killed and he also stole," said Patricio Navia, political science professor at Diego Portales University

for this man due to his excessive "Caravan of Death," 11 torture centers throughout the country, the 3 ships used for torturing people off shore, the disappearances, the outright, easy to grasp murders, why should anyone get rankled now?

That lead paragraph just astounds me. What the hell difference does it make if the man has emptied the treasury? He MURDERED thousands of people.

Making off with the funds is fairly customary among the right-wing @$$hole$ our own right-wing @$$hole$ have supported in Latin America:
one of the "perks."

Maybe they'll use this opportunity Gawd has sent them to close the books on the old ####, and permanently confine him to his house, at least, never to put one of his crispy old feet outside his door again.
