FCC chairman warns of more regulation
Aug. 18, 2003 | ASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- FCC Chairman Michael Powell says his agency will examine the effects of concentration in media ownership this fall, a nod to critics of the FCC's rollback on restrictions for owning newspapers and TV and radio stations.

Powell's surprise announcement Monday came at an annual gathering of telecommunications executives.

He gave no details about what the Federal Communications Commission examination will entail, saying they will be provided Wednesday at a news conference in Washington.

"As much as I'm invested in the rules that we did ... I have an obligation as an expert adviser to make sure this is channeled into something constructive," Powell said. "There is a sentiment being expressed by the American public, a concern about the media, a concern about big media."

Led by Powell, the Republican-dominated FCC voted 3-2 on June 2 to ease decades-old restrictions on decades-old media ownership rules. The changes, which go into effect on Sept. 4, allow a single company to own TV stations reaching nearly half the nation's viewers and combinations of newspapers and broadcast outlets in the same area.

2. Given The Choice
of Washington, DC in the heat and humidty of August or Aspen, CO in the cool mountain breezes of August, where would you choose. This is evidence that he is, at least, a little smarter than the chimp, though no less of a criminal.

This smells like the early kick-off to the compassionate chimpy 2004 campaign to me. Now I guess they all will slink back from the crime scene and pretend to be doing the will of the people until the next selection fraud.

Besides, their mission is accomplished. The free press is dead and the airwaves belong to the PNAC thugs. Now, just like the mafia, they will attempt to appear legitimate.

5.  Michael Powell is a big big fish
Deregulation = Big Fish eat little fish.

This is good for the Money Lords, they can cook their books, hid their money under the name of
democracy while the little fishes build their empires while singing songs of praise to the big fish.

To be free from regulation, especially to remove government regulations is a licence to steal.

7. They can't risk that the regs be changed by Congress

Bush said he'd veto and that would look as bad as it would be. Powell is just doing a stall. If public concern meant anything to him at all, he wouldn't have rammed it through in the first place.
