Britain to Ask Security Council to End Libya Sanctions

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Britain planned to ask the Security Council on Monday to end U.N. sanctions on Libya, bringing the international community a step nearer to closure on the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry was expected to circulate a draft resolution at an afternoon council meeting.

But a council vote can not be scheduled until Libya puts an expected $2.7 billion into a special account to compensate the families of the 270 people killed in the midair bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, council diplomats said.

That could come as early as tomorrow but may also slip later in the week, they cautioned.
