1. Salutations, all!
Glad to see we've made it thru the ether to DU2! Lots to play with on this new board....

So, today it looks like an "up" day, according to the blather...but yesterday some were expecting a "down" day, so pick your predictions and off we go!

2. Hey Ozy, Maeve and all!
Our first DU2 Stock Market Watch Thread! How exciting! I love the little pics everyone's got on their posts, gotta get me one of those.

So yes, the blather says things look good but I beg to differ. Now the big boys are back and the job markets is horrific! Throw in the publicity Team Bush lies are getting and, well, if they want to say things look "good" bully for them. That Denial River thing comes to mind.

Trying to remember, last summer when the markets plunged hundreds of points in a day, was there a terra-lert soon after?? I have had a sense of dread in that regard lately. I hope there is no merit to it.

Hope all had a grand weekend!! :hi:

4. some numbers for the week
http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/business/6248869.htm

• U.S. consumers stepped up their installment borrowing in April as auto sales rose. Consumer added $10.7 billion more to their non-mortgage debt during the month, a 7.4 percent gain.

<snip>

• U.S. wholesale prices fell for the second straight month in May. The 0.3 percent decrease in prices paid to U.S. factories, farmers and other producers was led by drops in gasoline and home heating oil prices, according to the Department of Labor, and followed a record 1.9 percent drop in April.

5. No reports due out today
A somewhat blah week on the news front, so the markets may react to how good the weekend was for the traders :eyes:

Had a fine 4th, btw. The big Columbus fireworks were disappointing since 200 of the finale shells didn't go off. But the Grove City fireworks were great, even tho they had to start early when the rains moved in! Our family watched from the shelter of a tarp we held above us and it was cool in a crazy sort of way...memorable, at the very least.

And the market opens UP

Nasdaq 1,700.01 +36.55 (+2.20%)
S&P 500 1,000.53 +14.83 (+1.50%)

9:40AM: The bulls come roaring back at the open following last Thursday's broad-based losses... Remarkable strength in overseas trading - in which Tokyo's Nikkei Average spiked 2.6% for its highest close in over 10 months, combined with the dollar's march to its best level against the euro in two months, has contributed to the upbeat tone of trading... The technology sector is pacing the advance, due in part to sizable gains in the large-cap technology issues...
Microsoft (MSFT 27.24 +0.75), specifically, has jumped following a Financial Times report that the software giant is considering paying shareholders a special dividend of more than $10 bln to reduce its $46 bln cash position...

13. 11:14 and blather
11:00AM: The market backs off its best levels of the morning, but continues to sport impressive gains... Notable strength in the year's standout groups - namely, biotech, semiconductor, computer hardware, and brokerage - has spearheaded the indices' aggressive push higher... The latter group has benefited from a Merrill Lynch upgrade of Morgan Stanley (MWD 46.14 +1.34) to Buy from Neutral due to valuation reasons... The only areas of the market that have demonstrated weakness are the gold and oil service shares...
The gold shares have exhibited the largest losses following the price of gold's $2.90 drop to $348.40/oz... The commodity has been pressured in response to the dollar's rise against the euro and yen, and the strong showing in US equities...
http://finance.yahoo.com/mo

Love to see the dollar rise against the euro--my trip to Ireland is firming up nicely and I wouldn't mind getting a better rate of exchange!

16. 12:44 with blather
12:30PM: Sellers remain an inactive bunch as the indices trade along their best levels of the day... The Nasdaq has outperformed its blue chip counterparts on a percentage basis today, with the tech-heavy Composite racing ahead 3.0% versus 1.9% for the S&P and 1.8% for the Dow... The relative strength of the Nasdaq has been in keeping with the broader trend year-to-date in which biotech and technology have posted some of the strongest gains...
The same groups have been the foundation of today's rally, with the large-cap technology issues - specifically - setting a 52-week high thanks to reports that Microsoft (MSFT 27.52 +1.03) may issue a special dividend to shareholders

I was waiting to sell half my 401k today, now that I'm up about 10% from my average share price. I'll leave my other IRA's alone (Index funds) as a hedge, but I'm not ready to trust 50% of my future to this market.

18. Hi Maeve. I just checked my IRA and teeny investment funds.
They are just $100 above their initial investment price in 1999. I swear that if these values were to reach withing $200 of their original value, I would sell the lot and put it in the money market.*

*For others reading this - it is not investment advice. It is purely wishful thinking on my part.

26. News about the coding and charts.
I am waiting to hear back about this - but some experimentation suggests that there may be a glitch in the tables feature. Even when using the strictly prescribed code, it still is not working for me. If this is not corrected then I will just post all the charts, stacked in a single column in tomorrow thread. If this is the case, I hope you like using your 'page down' key.

Work calls. See you tomorrow!

32. Glad you were here, Julie!
We got a storm or six passing thru and I had to shut down the computer...

I will note that the CNN blather is guarded--the past three years have taught some of the mouthpieces not to put all their faith in a bunch of bulls.
Weighing the risks
Investors trying to figure out where to put their money these days face a daunting decision.
July 7, 2003: 3:11 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Investors these days are forgiven if they feel they've been forced into an unwelcome game of the lady or the tiger with what's left of their money.

Put it into stocks? They've put on a big rally, valuations have become stretched and, if the past three years have taught us anything, stocks can turn tail quickly. Bonds? Even after a nasty reversal over the past few weeks, yields are near 40-year lows, making Treasurys look awfully expensive.

Cash? Money market funds are yielding below a half percent -- you'd have to have more than $10 million socked away to reasonably live off the interest. Real estate? Sure, housing's done great, but worries that the run is overdone abound, and, in any case, many investors already have most of their net worth tied up in their home...

little notes of caution and talk of a "correction" (which sounds better than "crash and burn"--you must admit). Gentle reminders of earnings warnings in among the blather that we are in for some seriously pleasant surprises. haha I can't wait to watch 'em dance through the earnings reports....

Julie the Sadist

P.S. Rad--so glad to see you and your partner are starting your new life together with such a wonderful windfall. Be sure to send a thank-you card to the Simian. A few more weeks oughta cover a card and postage! ;-) Hope all's well with you!

33. Feel good highs
Hope everyone made it through the 4th ok.

Looks like the marketeers were setting off fireworks on the trading floor. Feel good highs, no holiday terra-lert to worry about, and AWOL is off prospecting for oil in Africa.

NPR blather this morning about the "do not call list", dire warnings from tele-commers about massive layoffs by October - I think the number the talking head rattled off was about 3million people and with the job-LOSS recovery they will have no where to go.

<sarcasm ahead> My partner was jumping for joy, she saw a $1.00 more in her net pay from the taxcut. That's about $52.00 more a year... :bounce: we are in the money.... in the money.... :bounce: <sarcasm off>

Magic 8-ball for rest of the week - If all remains quiet on the news front, more feel good highs through Thursday and profit taking on Friday. Think we are back into the pattern of markets going up at the front end of the week and down at the back end.
