LAT: Vote on Gay Marriage Ban Backfires on GOP
THE NATION
Vote on Gay Marriage Ban Backfires on GOP
Senate Republicans had hoped the amendment would put the spotlight on Kerry. But it's Bush who's feeling the heat.

By Richard Simon, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — When Senate Republicans scheduled a vote on a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, they knew it would fail. They were hoping instead to put Democrats — and their expected presidential nominee, Sen. John F. Kerry — on the spot.

But with the vote coming today, it is a divided Republican Party that will seal the measure's doom. And it is President Bush who faces a potentially embarrassing defeat in the Republican-controlled Senate on a measure he has pushed.

There may not even be a straight up-or-down vote on the measure. The amendment, which would define marriage as a "union between a man and a woman," may succumb to a filibuster if the Senate cannot muster 60 votes to limit debate and put the issue to a vote....

***

Don Kettl, a University of Wisconsin political scientist, said Bush and Senate GOP leaders risked alienating swing voters in the Northeast and Midwest by highlighting the amendment.

"There are lots of moderate Republicans in these states trying hard to stay in sync with their own districts, and the Bush push to the right makes it harder for them to walk that tightrope," Kettl said. "It is sure to cause problems for other Republicans…. Given how close some key Senate races are likely to be — and how very, very close some relatively moderate key swing states could be — it's a risky strategy indeed."...

1. Interesting Sen Warner's concern about "wording" of amendment
Must not be harsh enough to compete with the Old Dominion's recent Virginia is for Haters laws.

Glad to see old White Bucks Sport Coat Pink Carnation Pat Boone remains spry enough to make it over to the Capitol building to bang the drums of hatred.

And then all the other well-meaners who want to take what is a civil right's issue and hand it over to the states. That's a good way of avoiding the issue, I guess.

2. Read the amendment and
what struck me is actually the last part of it. It appears to me that it would not only ban "marriages" but any type of union (civil). The devil is in the details folks. And these guys know how to twist the details to do the most damage.

5. Yeah it is, my
local "liberal" rag had a much different take of it (downplaying completely the damage to chimp). Have I mentioned lately how much I despise rethugs?

4. Ha! Even Pat Boone staggered in to add his valuable support.
From the article:
Entertainer Pat Boone visited the Capitol to drum up support, and the Christian Coalition of America told senators that their votes would be recorded on "scorecards" distributed throughout the nation before the November election.
(snip/...)
Pat has just gone strange, hasn't he? I guess he jsut can't cope with his loss of celebrity after the "new" wore off his "talent."

6. Can you imagine they'd trot that old hag out?
That spongly old Wonder Bread "entertainer" who hasn't sold a record since the 1950s, and most of those were songs he stole from R&B artists and whitenened up for mass consumption, or se he thought. The masses wanted the real thing. They bought the originals, and Boone's record career was dead. That he's managed to hold on lo these many decades is a mystery. Maybe it's that winning forever youthful, forever white bread, image so dear to America that keeps this icon going.

8. Flynt nailed Pat Boone 20 years ago
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 07:41 AM by The Zanti Regent
I almost busted my gut 20 years ago when Flynt published the picture "exposing" Pat Boone for the freak he is. I think you can still google the picture or maybe Bart Cop has it in his archives...

On edit:

Found it on Bart Cop. Look at your own risk...

10. Yep! All potatoes and no meat!
Just balls, and whitebread starch like the rest of him.

His awful 45s, on the Dot label I recall, were considered so worthless during my childhood that they were the first records (instead of baseball cards) you'd clothespin onto your bicycle spokes as you went clacking happpily down the street. Even then nobody could stand Pat Boone.

If Pat Boone ever invites you to the movies, don't eat from the popcorn box he's holding on his lap.

12. Hmm...Maybe gays tried to destroy his marriage? One of his biography sites
says Pat had "marital difficulties" as well as financial problems after his fade from fame in the 60s. Was gay marriage already a threat to traditional marriage in the 60's. Damn, the problem may be more serious than we thought!

7. I am confused why
Kerry and Edwards would attend but not vote in the procedural motion. Why can't they just stand up and say writing discrimination into the Constitution is WRONG and the politics of hatred is fascist? I would be MUCH more impressed with this tactic, the extreme haters are NEVER going to vote Democratic anyway.

13. GOP leaders risked alienating swing voter
BlondeSense..... the 6th Sense

Swing States

Blonde Editorial: Why are the Republicans trying to win swing states? It appears to be way off their agenda especially since they are so hell bent on preserving marriage. I imagine that swingers don't exemplify the moral values that Republicans would like us to live up to, in fact it seems a bit kinky to me. I am surprised that Mr Bush would even tempt his Christian soul by even campaigning in a swing state. I can understand that Mr Kerry would campaign there being that he is a hell bound Catholic, but why even bother campaigning in a swing state? Swingers seem to be quite liberal and are most likely to vote Democrat anyway. So what is all the hoopla about anyway?

UPDATE: This blonde is so embarrassed. I got a vast amount of email explaining to me that swing states aren't for swingers. Swing states are for people who go both ways. Now that is really kinky.

15. Repukes are so stupid.
Most people do not care about same sex marriage. Honest polls will tell you that.

18. The Repukes are just traitors as far as I can see
They are so handy at helping multinationals export jobs, maybe some guilt on the other side, but mostly the Repukes are the ones initiating it. We would of never had NAFTA if it wasn't for Bush one.

I Just Lost My Job: How Am I Going To Tell My Kids?

from Judith Lindenberger
Sharing Bad News About Layoffs

One of the responsibilities of a human resources professional is to let employees know that their job has been eliminated. It is seldom easy to do and often painful for the person who is hearing the news.

Just recently, I was involved in communicating a large layoff to employees at a Fortune 500 company. I sat with one woman after she had heard the news to tell her about the career transition services she could take advantage of. The woman was in shock and not ready to hear about transition services for her self. She said out loud several times, “How am I going to tell my kids this?”

When I asked her why she would not want to tell her kids, she said that her teenage son had been having a hard year in school and she did not want to upset him. She asked my advice.

Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 10:54 AM by rivertext
> " A Kerry aide said the two senators would not return to Washington if the measure faced a straight up-or-down vote."

that MIGHT BE correct if it read:

A Kerry aide said the two senators would not return to Washington UNLESS the measure faced a straight up-or-down vote.
