US welcomes back Beazley

"The federal opposition's standing in the eyes of America has improved in the wake of Kim Beazley's return to the frontbench.
Mr Beazley returned from self-imposed exile this week when Labor Leader Mark Latham appointed him opposition defence spokesman.

In recent weeks, US President George W Bush and senior Washington figures have condemned Labor's plan to withdraw troops from Iraq by Christmas.

In a strong sign relations were now thawing, US ambassador to Australia Tom Schieffer passed on Washington's approval of the promotion.
Mr Schieffer said Mr Beazley, a former Labor defence minister, was well regarded by the Republicans and Democrats in the US."
