Probe Faults FBI in Double Agent Case
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-3027156,00.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - One of the most damaging
espionage cases in U.S. history was more the
result of poor oversight by the FBI than master
spying by Robert Hanssen, said a Justice
Department report released Thursday.

The FBI's deficiencies, including an almost blind
trust in its own agents, enabled Hanssen to spy
for the Soviet Union and Russia for more than two
decades, according to the investigation by
inspector general Glenn A. Fine.

The report concluded that Hanssen, a top FBI
counterespionage official, received little
supervision and the bureau had few checks in
place that would deter him from spying or track
the secret documents he was taking. The FBI also
was reluctant to consider one of its own as a spy,
even as agents investigated the source of Soviet
assets and operations that were being
compromised by a mole in the U.S. government.

``While Hanssen escaped detection for more than
20 years, we found that this was not because he
was a master spy or because of any expert
knowledge of espionage tradecraft,'' Fine said.
``We found that significant deficiencies in the
FBI's internal security program played a major
role'' in the case.

1. Well of course during his last ten years the FBI director was a bit
preoccupied with investigating Bill Clinton than watching over or computerizing and technologically updateing his own department.

2. more the result of poor oversight by the FBI
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 11:01 AM by QuietStorm

Gee, that seems an understatement. That the US is a world power is proof our virtues are all screwed up. Between the CIA and the FBI and their fricken issues with jurisprudence and juridictional mixups I can not say intelligent life is evident. It would be why it might behoove the US to throw much more money at education. Staying on top due to strong arms and nuclear strength might just backfire in the long run. Perhaps even in the short run. And what has changed?

LAST TWO PARAGRAPHS

"In a point-by-point response Thursday, the FBI detailed the steps it has or will take to improve its oversight of counterintelligence agents, such as creation of a centralized security program, more random polygraph tests, more extensive background investigations and a financial disclosure program.

``Today, there is a nationally directed program for counterintelligence, centralized at FBI headquarters, to ensure accountability, control and leadership, and to allow the FBI to be more proactive in protecting critical national assets,'' FBI Director Robert Mueller said in a statement."

I THOUGHT THIS WAS MUELLER'S ASSESSMENT JUST AFTER THE RAMSEY INVESTIGATION CAME BACK POSITIVE. What is new?

3. Well if you think that's bad, think about a few revelations here
I keep on going back on how Mike Wallace from 60 minutes did that hit piece on Pollard, saying he was the biggest and worst crime ever. Of coarse they referenced a couple other bogus reference points of cases by the FBI when Hover ran it, so you could figure on the hit right there.

The ramifications of this seem to me as that one gang has co-opted another gang and is taking a cut. Knowing who works for who while they make moves in M.E. puts one in the catbird seat and makes for ability for someone to blackmail enormous.

Classified Pollard file supports 9/11 coverup of Saudi ties to Usama bin Laden
Noted terrorism expert John Loftus will publish an article in the forthcoming edition of Moment Magazine which reveals highly classified information about Jonathan Pollard, Pollard was a US Naval intelligence analyst who spied for Israel and is now serving a life sentence.
Loftus's article proves that Pollard was completely innocent of the major charges against him, namely that Pollard leaked the names of US spies behind the Iron Curtain. The second, and most controversial, part of the article explains why Pollard is still in prison if the Government knows he is innocent. Pollard gave Israel the 1984"blue book" listing Arab intelligence agents, including Usama Bin Laden. Pollard's file shows that, contrary to what Congress was told, US intelligence knew perfectly well that they were laundering money through Saudi Arabia to fund known terrorists in their drive to oust the Russians from Afghanistan. To protect themselves from charges of negligence, senior members of US intelligence covered up the Saudi-Al Qaeda connection right up to 9/11.

"Saudi Arabia to fund known terrorists in their drive to oust the Russians from Afghanistan. To protect themselves from charges of negligence, senior members of US intelligence covered up the Saudi-Al Qaeda connection right up to 9/11."

They would have known. They financed the ISI and the mujuhadeen they were all on the same side during the Afghan War. And the side the US financed (and this same admin might I add) is the enemy (the terrorist enemy and to more than just the US). A fickled finger of fate it seems to me. At that time those ties most certainly would get some backs up.

On edit: THE BELOW SNATCH MAKES FOR INTERESTING SUBTEXT HERE. Much more so interesting the Nazi tie in's would be played down. A war within a war? Very thought provoking this link you placed.

" While the focus of this book is the secret war against the Jews, it raises larger questions about how clandestine intelligence operations have distorted our appreciation of history and made it nearly impossible for the average citizen to follow rationally his country's foreign policy initiatives. For this reviewer, it has placed the events of 9/11, the war on Afghanistan and the impending war on Iraq, in a larger, more disturbing perspective and suggests rather sad answers to seemingly logical questions like: "Why didn't America retaliate against Saudi Arabia (15 of the 19 suicide hijackers in the 9/11 attacks were Saudis) after 9/11?" and "What kind of secret game is George W. Bush and his advisors playing with their post-9/11 saber-rattling?"

5. A FEW revelations?
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 12:34 PM by QuietStorm

I had to come back Loftus, book which was criticized as being based on soft evidence. Well it might just be (do not know enough to speculate), but the trail of intelligence from germany to russia and so on, and this deadlock with Saudi Arabia is a big conflict of interest, it seems to me. Your link prompted me to do a googles and the Saudi Arabia tie is most definitely a problematic one.

They are not in order. They probably will mean different things to different people (dependent on one's frame of reference). Various stuff that came up in my search (like I said a war within a war perhaps). Be sure to check date of each article I believe some go back to 1998 or 1999 and I have not placed them in date order. Speaks for quite the vice. Or is it vices? The games people play. Seems like some major criss cross and conflict of interest here:

Saudi prince says U.S. losing credibility, but vows no oil curbs

By Ron Hutcheson

President Bush greets Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah during the de facto Saudi leader's arrival Thursday at Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas.
Pablo Martinez Monsivais/AP
CRAWFORD, Texas -- Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah warned President Bush Thursday that U.S. support for Israel is undermining the war on terrorism and destroying U.S. credibility in the Arab world.
In a blunt face-to-face talk at Bush's Texas ranch, Abdullah urged Bush to step up his efforts to end Israel's retaliatory raids on Palestinian areas. The meeting came at an unusually tense time in U.S.-Saudi relations, but Saudi officials denied reports that Abdullah would consider withholding oil shipments or shutting down U.S. military bases in his country if Bush refused to heed his advice.
''Saudi Arabia made it clear, and has made it clear publicly, that they will not use oil as a weapon. I appreciate that,'' Bush said.
Even so, Abdullah and members of his entourage firmly voiced their displeasure with Bush's Middle East policies and his support for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon......more

A T H E N S, Greece, Oct. 10 — Saudi Arabia has been never much of a combatant in past Arab-Israeli wars, but it has become one of Israel’s toughest critics in the current Palestinian-Israeli crisis. And now, it has become the first major Arab state to warn of possible action against the Jewish state.
The warning, from Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz, was coupled with an assurance that the kingdom would not use oil as a leverage point against the West, as it had when tensions heated up in the past..... more

Saudi Arabia-US Ties at Critical Moment: News Analysis
Saudi Arabia and the United States, which have long been strategic allies, have been at odds in the past months. Relations soured recently as relatives of victims of the September 11 terror attacks sued Saudi Arabia for financing terrorist organizations and Rand Corp., a think tank of the US government, branded Saudi Arabia as the "kernel of evil."

Very interesting the question: With most hijackers passports linked to Saudi Arabia. Can't see I have a definitive answer, but what I will say is that Loftus book and some of that history that is verifiable does shed an interesting light on the matter.

Sharon in 9/11 War Provocation?
by Jeffrey Steinberg

Aug. 28, 2002 (EIRNS)—Among senior intelligence analysts in the United States, the Arab world, and Israel, the fear is growing that Ariel Sharon is about to covertly launch a Sept. 11-type terrorist attack targetting the United States—in order to drag President Bush into war against Iraq.

Two factors may be impelling Sharon to take such provocative steps.

First, there is a growing chorus of leading U.S. military figures, active duty and retired, and prominent Republican Party foreign policy mandarins, who are voicing opposition to the war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq. On Aug. 25, former Secretary of State James Baker III added his name to the list of opponents of a unilateral American attack on Iraq on the op ed page of the New York Times. The previous day, the Tampa Tribune had reported that Gen. Anthony Zinni (USMC-ret), who was the previous Commander-in-Chief of the Central Command, and now an adviser to Secretary of State Colin Powell, came out strongly against an Iraq attack, warning of grave strategic consequences.

Zinni also assailed the group of Bush Administration neo-con war advocates who never served a day in uniform. This whole grouping—including Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, James Woolsey, Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas), and even Vice President Dick Cheney—is being widely referred to as the "chickenhawks."

"It's pretty interesting," Zinni told an audience in Tallahassee, Fla., "that all the generals see it the same way, and all the others who have never fired a shot and are hot to go to war, see it another way."

ISRAEL AND 9/11
Feds holding 60 Israelis in connection with 9/11 – Why?
Haven't we had enough of Israel? The other day, an explosive device planted near a school by Israeli army commandos killed five Palestinian kids: Mohammed Na'im Astal, 14; his brother, Akram Na'im Astal, 7; Aniz Idris Astal, 11; his brother Omar Idris Astal, 14; and Mohammad Sultan Astal, 12, a cousin. They were blown to smithereens, and not even the shards of their bodies could be found. The children were killed 200 yards from the UN-sponsored school they attended, along a path regularly used by students. Looming over this horrific death scene, the shadow of an Israeli army watchtower guarding the nearby Gush Katif settlement.

BULLDOZING PEACE
Haven't we had enough of Israel? The day after the US announced its new Middle East peace initiative, the Israelis bulldozed more Palestinian homes in Gaza and announced the planned construction of new houses for Jewish settlers in the West Bank city of Hebron, thumbing their noses at their American benefactors at a time when the US itself is besieged.

POLLARD, AGAIN
Haven't we had enough of Israel? When Prime Minister Ariel Sharon visits Bush at the White House, he plans to "raise the issue of Jonathan Pollard," according to Middle East Newsline. Pollard, you'll remember, is the Israeli spy whose betrayal of American secrets led to the deaths of untold numbers of American agents in the field. Many contend that the Israelis traded the stolen information to the Soviet Union in return for increasing the emigration of Russian Jews to Israel. In "The Case Against Jonathan Pollard," Seymour M. Hersh relates a conversation between the late William J. Casey, then CIA director, and one of his station chiefs, a month after Pollard's arrest. When his subordinate asked why the CIA chief was ordering stepped-up monitoring of an Israeli delegation on a routine visit,
