Atkins diet may reduce chances of conception

Atkins 'affects conception chances'

By Caroline Ryan
BBC News Online health staff in Berlin

Meat is a good source of protein
Eating a high protein diet - such as Atkins - could reduce a woman's chances of conceiving, researchers suggest.

The University of Colorado carried out tests which showed that if mice ate a diet containing 25% protein, it would affect embryo and foetal development.

They told a Berlin fertility conference this could mean women eating over 30% protein may have trouble conceiving.

But an Atkins spokeswoman said they had seen cases where the diet improved women's chances of becoming pregnant.

1. I'm a competitive athlete and
my trainer/coach HATES Atkins! I am a powerlifter, btw, which means I've got to build as much strength as possible. The macro-nutrient which makes training possible: carbohydrates. Protein is only useful during the muscle-repair phase of training, but you'll never create the conditions for muscle-repair (and thus strength increas) if you don't have enough glycogen in your system to do the work in the first place.

Eat clean, minimally processed foods and use common sense.

15. Atkins Only Eliminates Carbs TEMPORARILY
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 11:12 AM by cryingshame
2 weeks.

Then you reintroduce vegetal carbs (bananas, lentils etc.)

For the most part, the carbs not on the Atkins diet are in white bread/flour.

Atkins diet is NOT about eating steak every night.

People are totally clueless about what the diet is.

2. I went to hear a registered dietitian speak about the Atkins the other day
What an eye opener!!

This is the site of a doctor, not the dietitian I saw, but the facts are way against Atkins:

this--Atkins is the biggest scam going these day--oh, after the Bush administration.

4. The vegetarians vs Atkins
For anyone who wants to know the full facts...many of the anti-Atkins people are animal activists and vegetarians ( not that there is anything wrong with that)

I think any anti-Atkins article should list a full disclosure on their particular slant.

19. Well, vegetarianism is widely recognized as the healthiest diet ...
so it makes sense. Plenty of backup for that, too. In fact, when the Atkins dieters start getting heart disease, they may choose to REVERSE it with the ONLY diet known to do that, a strict vegetarian diet.

24. Sorry to be disrespectful but that facts sheet is full of crap
Because it's based on the assumptions that I will be eating nothing but 20grams of carbohydrates for the rest of my life (which is very dangerous).

It also assumes that I will only be slaughtering cows and eating one of them a day for the rest of my life

And it assumes that I will never ever touch fiber or fruit again.

I am an Atkins user and have been quite sucessful. The reason I choose Atkins is because I'm a carbohydrate junkie. I jones for sweets the way a smoker craves a cigerette and the way a junkie will break laws to get their next fix. I'm embarassed to say that I've gone to extreme measures in order to down 3-5 candy bars per day including searching every nook&cranny for a few extra coins and even 'borrowing' change from someone (only to forget to return it). It's an embarassment to type this but it's true.

Atkins knows that a dieter will never ever suceed in losing weight until the dieter breaks their addiction to processed carbohydrates. And if an Atkins dieter READS THE DAMN BOOK (which most failed Atkins Dieters usually don't do) then you know that after the first 2 weeks of low carb, you slowly reintroduce the healthy carbs back into your diet.

Atkins really should be thought of as a system that helps break the addiction of process foods & sugars. And if this system is used correctly, within 2 months anyone on this diet should be back to eating 3 square meals a day based on the FDA Food Pyramind and NOT the junk food that we use to stuff our bodies with.

I never thought I'd see the day that food replaced sex as a totem of morality!

So ... are low-carb dieters the sluts or the prudes in this new moral system?

It's the rancid ketones that Atkins dieters seem to feel is their right to breath on everyone.

Sorry folks - breath mints don't cut it.

18. This is like an argument I remember about tobacco.
There was a University study a few years back that showed that smokers were less efficient workers.

A "Tobacco Institute" spokesperson claimed the opposite.

Who do you believe? A University or people who make billions off of their product.

I know who I'd tend to believe.

Too many goddamned people on the planet anyway. And people are too stupid and shortsighted to be responsible. So this is good news.
