Bush Says Schwarzenegger Not Only Good Candidate
snips:
Wed August 13, 2003 04:30 PM ET
By Adam Entous
CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush said on Wednesday that Arnold Schwarzenegger was not the only good candidate running in the California recall election ...In saying that other candidates in the race would make "a good governor," Bush appeared to distance himself from Schwarzenegger ...Bush pointedly questioned why Schwarzenegger had become the biggest political story in the nation, overshadowing his own presidential race....
"It is the biggest political story in the country? That's interesting. That says a lot. That speaks volumes," Bush told reporters at his Texas ranch. "Oh, I think there's maybe other political stories. Isn't there, like a presidential race coming up? Maybe that says something."

3. What an egomaniac -- can't even share the spotlight with one of his own?
I thought the asshole was on vacation -- anyway I was hoping to have a vacation from him!

4. Conspiracy theory: Arnold and Warren Buffet are Dem moles in the GOP
Famed Democratic billionaire Warren Buffet is running Arnold's campaign, and the fact that Arnold is a social liberal, maybe that Arnold's candidacy is an attempt to keep a real GOP candidate from winning? Arnold's married to a Kennedy.

Still, even if that was true, I can't imagine Arnold/Buffet giving us anything more than a socially liberal, economically right-wing state government in CA. Then again, Davis was pretty much like that himself.

6. I'm going to fight Arnold. I also state that...
he's basically a liberal Republican. He's almost surely to the left of Pete Wilson. But I think that the recall is illegitimate. We need to pressure these would-be governors to reveal just what they think would solve all the state's problems.

No Recall/Bustamante Yes!

5. Bush is sort of right in this case
The fact that Arnold has almost been the only story in the media for the last week says a lot about the state of American politics and the American media.

11. If that would be the message, then yes,
but do you really believe him saying this out of worry about the state of American politics and media?

Nah...

7. He's just trying to cover his ass with the right wing base
of his party. Rove probably made him do it. They figure Arnold is a lock anyway, so why alienate Fatbaugh and the rest of the Nazis who are the real power of the Republican party.

14. The reason Rove got Arnold into this thing
is that a rightwinger like Simon can't win in Calif. Before Arnold's entry Gray Davis constantly repeated the mantra that a successful recall effort might mean an anti-abortion, anti-environment governor. Now Rove has pulled the rug out from under that argument. Voters who dislike Davis are being given a seemingly pro-chice, pro-environment repuke alternative - never mind that the guy has no experience and comes with more baggage than a 747.

9. Is Bush jealous of Arnold's big muscles?
I've been following Bush's comments on Arnold. It's interesting that he seems to see him more as a physical rival than an ideological ally. Today he sounded downright jealous that he was taking all the limelight away from the presidential race, that is, away from him.

Q What do you think of Arnold Schwarzenegger and would you consider campaigning for him?

THE PRESIDENT: I will never arm wrestle Arnold Schwarzenegger. (Laughter.) No matter how hard I try, I'll never lift as much weight as he does.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/08/20030808-1.html

Q Are you going to do anything for Arnold? You say he'll be a good governor. You're spending two days in California.
THE PRESIDENT: I'm going to campaign for George W., as you know.
Q Will he get a plug in the speech, a mention?
THE PRESIDENT: I think I've answered the question, and yes, he would be a good governor, as would others running for governor of California. Like you, I'm most interested in seeing how the process evolves. It's a fascinating bit of political drama evolving in the state -- in the country's largest state.
Q It's also the biggest political story in the country. Is it hard to go in there and say nothing about it?
THE PRESIDENT: It is the biggest political story in the country? That's interesting. That says a lot. That speaks volumes.
Q You don't agree?
THE PRESIDENT: It's up to -- I don't get to decide the biggest political story. You decide the biggest political story. But I find it interesting that that is the biggest political story in the country, as you just said.
Q You don't think it should be?
THE PRESIDENT: Oh, I think there's maybe other political stories. Isn't there, like, a presidential race coming up? (Laughter.) Maybe that says something. It speaks volumes, if you know what I mean. But, yes, it's an interesting story, it really is. And I'm looking forward, like you are, to seeing the outcome of the interesting story.
But, no, I'm going to go, I'm going to talk about -- now that you've asked, are you going on the trip?
Q Yes, sir.
THE PRESIDENT: Good. Well, you'll see me speak to Marines and their families, thanking them for their service to our country, reminding them that what's taking place in Iraq is essential to U.S. security. Then I'm going to go to a national park, talking about the fact that we believe parks ought to be revitalized, and talk about the initiatives that I've laid out to do that. And then, of course, I'll be doing a little spade work for the '04 campaign. (Laughter.) One of the most important political -- (laughter.)

He's not the focus of attention down on his ranch, so he's going to stomp his foot and cry until someone gives him a lollipop. This cretin is a fucking disgrace...curse you Scalia!

Also, as for the assertations here and in other threads that Ah-nold is a "social liberal"...I'm not convinced. Not at least until I hear it out of his schnitzel trap and not the spin going on all around him. So what if he said he didn't mind homosexuality in Cosmopolitan 27 years ago or that he smoked pot in a bodybuilding documentary 26 years ago?

How does he feel about it now?!!! When will that lummox speak?
