Doctor: Girl said mother tortured her
By Glenn May
TRIBUNE-REVIEW

The 7-year-old girl reeked of bleach when she came into the hospital, and doctors testified Friday they could not tell whether the burns covering half her body were caused by the bleach, frostbite, flames or a combination of all three.

Haley Liberman told doctors that her mother had hit her with a puppy choke chain, forced her to roll naked in the snow, then made her eat cat food, Children's Hospital Dr. Janet Squires testified yesterday at a preliminary hearing for Haley's mother, Debra Liberman, 50.

"Her mother said, 'What else do I have to kill you with?' and she poured bleach all over her," Squires testified that the child told her.

Allegheny County District Justice Anna Marie Scharding ordered Liberman, of Carrick, to face trial on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangering, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child.

1. obviously severe mental illness, to hurt a child so
pray little girl is doing better now and that mother gets major help.
She does need help besides just punished.

3. You are so right. People are cracking up from the pressure of the
way the deck is stacked against them. This is not to excuse the mother, but this kind of thing will only get worse without radical change.

4. So, I torture and kill someone
and I have no responsibility?
Horse feathers!
This women should rot in jail.
And, once again, we see that no one stepped forward to help the child.
Someone HAD to know that this was going on.
They should be charged too.
I am sick to death of kids getting killed, maimed, injured and the folks getting off.

6. You misunderstand Diver,
I did advocate punishment also.

I am not excusing her actions, just trying to have compassion for all and find an explanation for such behavior.

Remember when they found Dahmer sane? WTF! How could anyone in their right mind have found him sane??

8. She should work with other children that have been abused,
supervised, of course, so she may see the terrible pain she caused. I feel that would be fitting punishment.

5. It says that they're holding a preliminary hearing...
...so the incident was probably several months ago at least.

7. "Haley now is doing well
and finished a successful year in school, said her father, Daniel Liberman, 55, of Virginia, who now has custody of the girl."

It sounds to me as though it's been much more than a few months.

IMHO, the mother should spend a decade in a mental institution to assure a recovery. The child will hold the memories of what her mother did to her for a lifetime.
