Rancorous House Votes Record Intelligence Money
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved record funding for U.S. intelligence agencies, after hours of partisan sniping over recent intelligence failures and national security issues.

The amount of funding is classified for the 15 intelligence agencies that include the CIA and National Security Agency. But House Intelligence Committee Chairman Porter Goss, a Florida Republican, said it was the highest level in history and exceeded the previous year by hundreds of millions of dollars.

Experts say the funding, approved by the House in a 360-61 vote, is about $40 billion for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

The bill would increase funds to hire and training CIA clandestine officers who recruit foreign spies, establish new programs to raise proficiency in Arabic and other key languages, and increase funds for analysis.

It also would direct the CIA inspector general to audit evidence of any relationship between deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's regime and al Qaeda before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
