Davis campaign strategy is to run outside recall circus
Davis campaign strategy is to run outside recall circus

TOM CHORNEAU, Associated Press Writer Tuesday, August 12, 2003

(08-12) 23:38 PDT SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) --

Although past races have earned Gov. Gray Davis his reputation as an aggressive campaigner, advisers say he'll fight the recall election with a strategy based on trying to fly above the circus swirling below.

If he is to survive the first recall election in California history, his advisers say, he must also show voters the Republican-led recall on Oct. 7 will not solve California's problems.

It will, they say, merely aggravate those woes by costing $66 million dollars and possibly leaving a small, fringe group in control of nation's most populous state and the world's fifth-largest economy.

"He's the only guy in the campaign that has the office and the only one who really understands how destabilizing this is," said Davis media consultant David Doak. "He's determined to project an image of stability, that things are under control and at the same time, fight for his job." (snip/...)

3. I think it would be even nicer if he called it

the right-wing coup attempt that it is. The GOP doesn't give a rat's rear end about the voters, they just want to be in control. And they certainly aren't going to solve California's problems--it would take money of their pockets. Why aren't the GOP telling people how they're gong to fix the things that Davis couldn't? And why is their frontrunner a complete neophyte?

4. It's a sideshow, not a circus.

There's little demonstrated skill or talent here, merely many examples of the wonderful diversity that's California. We have a midget, a stongman, a bearded lady, a herd of elephant men, and a whole panoply of geeks, freaks, and shills.

I'm waiting for a political cartoon that'll portray it as such. I don't expect to wait long.

5. This is a colossal mistake
Gore ran on a theme of "taking the high road". The press proceeded to turn him into a joke. There is no "high road" in politics anymore, folks. You have to fight fire with fire. This ain't your father's Republican party. In the last twenty years they've turned into Vikings, sacking and plundering wherever they go. They burn the villages, kill the men, rape the women and sell the children into slavery.
