Clinton book full of kudos for Bowles

In his new autobiography, former President Clinton praises one-time aide Erskine Bowles as a "world-class deal maker" who helped balance the federal budget and played a mean game of golf.
Though most attention has focused on Monica Lewinsky, his 957-page "My Life" includes a dozen references to Bowles, a Charlotte Democrat and former White House chief of staff now running for the U.S. Senate.
Clinton also has kind words for a handful of other Carolinians, including evangelist Billy Graham, former N.C. Gov. Jim Hunt and University of South Carolina football coach Lou Holtz. He is less charitable to a pair of longtime nemeses, former Sen. Jesse Helms and federal Judge David Sentelle, a former Charlotte lawyer.
Charlotte-area bookstores reported steady sales of the $35 book, which hit shelves Tuesday, but no extraordinary lines.
For Bowles, Clinton has nothing but admiration. He called him "a superb manager and our best liaison to the business community." He describes his 1995 decision to elevate the Charlotte investment banker from head of the Small Business Administration to deputy chief of staff.
