Mary-Kate Olsen being treated for eating disorder
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 02:45 PM by Bleachers7
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Teen actress Mary-Kate Olsen, who with her twin sister Ashley has grown into an American pop icon and fashion brand, has entered a program for treatment of an eating disorder reported to be anorexia.

The 18-year-old co-star of last month's film "New York Minute" recently "entered a treatment facility to seek professional help for a health-related issue," publicist Michael Pagnotta said Tuesday.

"She is thankful for the encouragement and support of her friends and family, who are with her every step of the way," he added.

A person familiar with the situation told Reuters that Olsen was suffering from an eating disorder. Olsen entered a facility during the past week or 10 days and was expected to remain in treatment for about a month, the person said.

How long before she is hauled off by some cops for public drunkenness?

13. My daughter is 9, and she thinks they're stupid
She saw a couple of their movies and her exact words were "who told them they could act?".

My daughter likes Britney Spears' music, but doesn't want to be Spears or dress like Spears.

Her role models, according to her anyway, are Hillary Clinton, Mother Teresa and the Harry Potter author. But she may just be telling me what I want to hear.

After seeing those pictures of her at the Chinese theater. She looked starved.

Sad.

5. It's very sad
At least she has the millions to receive proper treatment, which most anorexics don't. Then again, what role did her massive celebrity play in all this?

6. She should walk away
get healthy and take the millions she has made and freakin' enjoy life. Besides - she would create some sort of weird and twisted legend around her memory. Better that than to be rmemebered for staying at the party for WAY too long - and that is already happening.

7. That whole child acting trip is nothing but
cruel and unusual punishment IMHO....the irony is she is starving herself amidst abundance. The Olsen twins are multi-multi millionaires...she can afford pie for desert seven days a week.
I hope she learns to love herself or whatever...

24. I agree, there should be nobody under the age of 18 on TV or film.
Let all the children parts be played by short adults. Any parts that can't be filled is done with computers. There is no reason for anyone under 18 to appear on TV or film.

27. A very scary situation
I have 3 gorgeous boys. When my oldest was about 8 I got approached by a major agent who wanted to "make him famous". I turned then down cold. It seems to me that if a kid can't have a childhood, trouble is going to hapen. We could have been rich & he, famous. But, I stand by my choice. I am glad my son has had the opportunity to be a child. As a parent I feel that it is my responsibility to ensure that he can be a child & not support me.

I thought maybe she had eaten - er, consumed, that is - her sister to get rid of the competition and confusion.

11. If just for the sake of all the little girls who look up to them....
I hope she gets better. Maybe she could go on to be a role model for all those anorexic and bulimic young girls and women whose psychological scars manifests in the form of starving themselves.

This is one of the more dangerous psychological disorders and one of the hardest to treat. I hope she doesn't end up in the 20% category of those who die from this......

21. That's an Onion editorial.
I was just looking for it.

Seriously, anorexia is terrible disease and I hope she can put it behind her. It sounds like she's getting help, anyway.

23. actually ...
mary-kate was nominated for a daytime Emmy; her sister never was. I have no reason for knowing that, but I do. I do try to keep up with what the young people are interested in.

20. Mean-spirited DUers strike again....
Give the girl a break. In this she is like hundreds of thousands of other women and girls. Celebrity is incidental. She needs help.

22. Eating disorders and borderline
eating disorders are a major public health issue in this country. Maybe this will actually wake up some of the girls who look up to the twins. You don't want to starve yourself into illness, girls! You don't want to be keeling over from malnutrition while trying on size zero pants in the Pac-Sun!

I don't particularly care about these two girls (though I thought they were very funny -- they were willing to skewer their own image -- on Saturday Night Live recently). But I do care when yet another girl succumbs to the pressure to be thinner than pencil thin, as if that's the norm in this country.

26. More dumb "celebrity news"
I can't feel sorry for this no-talent little princess because her self-esteem revolves around how much she weighs. She is one of the richest people in the country--and for WHAT? This country is sicker than she is, with its over-the-top "celebrity" worship.
