(Nader Gets) Pie in Face, (Willie Brown) Calls to God in CA Gov. Race
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=584&ncid=584&e=1&u=/nm/20030813/pl_nm/politics_california_dc

Highlighting the atmosphere of political circus was a pie in the face delivered to former presidential candidate Ralph Nader, who was in San Francisco to endorse a Green Party candidate. The pie thrower ran and escaped from the scene...

Davis ally Willie Brown -- who a few weeks ago said Democrats would terminate Schwarzenegger should he decide to run -- was somber when assessing the odds of defeating the recall.

"It's not going to be easy," Brown, mayor of San Francisco, told Reuters. "If you had to bet, you'd have a better shot at the lottery."

"We need some divine assistance," he said. "Arnold is a formidable candidate."

25. a lemon meringue pie?
I clearly remember this now memorable incident involving Clark Kerr when he was at the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. I happened so fast that we did not have time to react. Someone did take the picture of the culprit:

In Indiana, Dr. Clark Kerr, President Emeritus of the University of California, got a pie in the face. In the second installment in his two-volume memoir, "The Gold and the Blue," Kerr describes the incident: as he was delivering a speech in fall 1969 at Indiana University, he was "hit by a lemon meringue pie in my face, and the lemon meringue covered my head, filled my mouth, and engulfed my glasses."

http://www.dailycal.org/article.asp?id=11521

BTW, I think that hitting someone with a pie is the highest expression of free speech our country has.

DEVIL'S PIE
When a masked man hit Clark Kerr,
former president of the Univerity
of California, in the face with a
custard pie, it made national news.
James Retherford was arrested while
Kerr completed his remarks in Woodburn
Hall. AP/ Wide World photo.

Campus unrest was a new experience for the administration, which was accustomed to handling individual incidents but not a massive protest movement. "1969 was a particularly startling experience for almost everybody," Rogers says. "The sudden movement of students against authority at all levels was something of a surprise. I don't know how many of us were really on our toes at that point because it was so totally new. My personal hope in the spring of 1969 was that at the administrative level we would not do something stupid."

The willingness of both student leaders and administrators to quell the more violent members of their ranks helped defuse the situation. IUB student body president Keith Parker spoke to students and administrators during the tense days on IU's campus in May 1970, after President Nixon announced that the United States would expand the Vietnam War into Cambodia. Parker's voice of calm prevented any violent clashes between students and police during the protests, when students surrounded Bryan Hall and demanded to speak with administrators.

5. Well, it's nice that Davis is giving so much credit to arnie's
ability as a serious candidate! It obviously doesn't take much experience or even a good actor to be taken seriously.

10. You've got to take him seriously!
This is a short campaign and the GOD DAMN Rethuglicans are going MILK Arnie's star power for all it's worth. He must be fought off. The latest NBC poll put's Arnie at 31% and Bustamante at 19%. There is no guarentee that Arnie is going to fade, easily at least!

8. I'll take "Bay Area Mayors named Brown who Suck Up to Ahh-nuld"
for 400, please, Alex!

Yesterday it was Oakland's Jerry Brown, and today, the original "Slick Willie" himself.

But wait! Willie's the guy who's planning to recall the recall winner, should there be one. Could he be planning to pull a Darrell Issa and run himself (minus the dropping-out-in-tears part and the auto-theft part, of course)?

30. Film on CNN: Nader tried to throw it make at his attacker
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 07:22 AM by Snellius
I just saw the footage on CNN early this morning. Nader gets hit from the side by someone who comes at him from his left. It takes Nader a while to react but, to his credit, he quickly grabs a hunk of pie from his cheek and hurls it back at his fleeing attacker.

31. Yep, But He Didn't "Take it in good humor"
Didn't look like he enjoyed it, although he defended by sling a gob back. Then he stalked around for a long second without starting to clean it off. He looked like the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Hahahaha.

Ah, boos for LIEBERMAN, pie for NADIR--------there IS karma sometimes. The two of them should trademark boos and pie, respectively, they've found their symbols and nobody else should use them.

36. Weapons of Mass Dough
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 09:24 AM by PATRICK
The rebirth of kinder gentler violence. But Brown's comment is what interests me most. Here is another career politician who commits an obvious public blunder, granting legitimacy to Arnold's campaign. Granted you can't laugh it off but this is NOT the way to speak about it. He might not even be a formidable candidate as time goes on, but if not then Brown looks equally bad. Ventura was repressed but Arnold, a close Bush Repuke from way back, is going to have a lot of serious scrutiny and testing. Make it wear thin.

Not the worst faux pas, Mayor Brown, but I think there should be some degree training in politicking for professional polticians besides circumlocution, pork and photo ops.
