Republican Urges Kerry to Quit the Senate
Republican Urges Kerry to Quit the Senate

BOSTON - A top Massachusetts Republican on Tuesday called on Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) to resign from the Senate while he seeks the presidency, a vacancy that would allow the GOP to fill the seat.

Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey argued that Kerry, the state's four-term senator, has missed too many roll call votes and has done a poor job of representing his constituents. Of the 112 Senate votes this year, Kerry has voted just 14 times, according to an Associated Press tally.

"It's not fair, it's not right and the public is not being well-served," said Healey, who said she was speaking on behalf of Republican Gov. Mitt Romney. "I'm calling on John Kerry to resign so that we can fill that office with someone who is 100 percent devoted to the job of representing the people of Massachusetts."

A spokesman for the Kerry campaign did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Kerry, who will receive the Democratic nomination for president at next month's convention in Boston, said in February that he had no plans to resign his Senate seat. more at

15. Hey...I like that proposal, Bush resigns the presidency to campaign
and Kerry will resign the Senate to campaign, that seems reasonable. Other than that, if I were Kerry I'd take that opportunity to make sure America understands that Bush has taken more vacation days than any president in history, and he's a terror president. The hypocrisy is getting even more absurd as they slip in the polls.

120. One thing about Lieberman...
I don't think what Lieberman did was right, running for VP and Senate at the same time. No one should have to resign from an elected position to run for another one, though. They can if they want, but no one has the right to demand it except the voters themselves.

26. It's been confirmed that E. Dole would have switched her vote...
if Kerry came back to vote on it. She wasn't the only Repug that would have switched their vote to "no", too. There was NO WAY the Repugs would have let it pass. If Kerry came back, then Hastert would know that he could control Kerry's campaign, and if he didn't come back, then they'd use it as ammo, like they're doing right now.
It was, unfortunately, a lose-lose situation for Kerry.

130. No, No, No, No, No. That's a Right-Wing Manufactured Lie.
It always makes me sad when people actually believe this crap.

Here's one version of what really happened, from CNN's news story about the unemployment benefits extension vote that day:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/05/11/kerry.vote/

In a statement, President Bush's re-election campaign said Kerry was "too busy playing politics" to do his job.

But Democrats shot back that Republicans in the Senate -- most of whom opposed the measure -- engineered Tuesday's vote to embarrass Kerry, who has publicly supported the measure to extend unemployment insurance for an additional 13 weeks for those who have already exhausted their benefits.

"John Kerry has fought again and again to extend unemployment benefits for workers left behind in the Bush economy," said Kerry campaign spokesman David Wade. "The reason we haven't succeeded is because George Bush opposes extending unemployment insurance, and so do his allies."

<snip>

But a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, charged that Republicans engineered the vote to embarrass Kerry, suggesting that if he had been on hand Tuesday to vote for it, Republicans would have persuaded one of the 11 GOP senators who voted for the measure to change sides, killing it anyway.

...to do a job he is not doing. Keeping his Senate seat is contingent on what the good people of Mass want. I am fairly sure they have some mechanism in place for appointing someone to take his place if that is what they want.

The issue of getting a paycheck while out campaigning has come up before and the politician simply quit getting paid and gave up a few other perks.

Since Kerry does not seem to listen to us much now...what will change once he has won the election and we are no longer needed? I prefer to hold his feet to the fire a bit now and let him know his vote is not as guaranteed as he may think it is. Since the Republicans will eventually roast him on this...who is helping him more?

...flop on others. I doubt he could care any less on which is which.

I also don't mind if he stays a Senator while he runs. This is an issue for his constituency to decide on. It does not say much for his confidence, but that is something for Kerry to decide on. As to the $12,000 or so he makes per month, that is the taxpayers' issue to decide on. This taxpayer says don't print any more checks.

I am not attacking Kerry. If you want to call it that you can, but it does not make it true. I just want him to see that some of his base don't like paying for work not performed. The Republicans will not be so nice about it.

It has long been clear that George W. Bush would campaign for re-election as a wartime president. Homeland security and the threat of terrorist attacks are frequent topics for Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

But twice in three days along Central Florida's Interstate 4 corridor?

Trips by Cheney to Orlando on Monday and by Bush to Tampa today have political observers wondering whether Republicans feel a need to shore up support for their signature issue.

If they were doing anything really important, it would be different..

"I announce that I will forego the privileges not only of the office of the majority leader but of the United States Senate itself, from which I resign effective on or before June 11th," a choked-up Dole told a Capitol Hill news conference, flanked by Republican lawmakers and a few Democrats. "And I will then stand before you without office or authority, a private citizen, a Kansan, an American, just a man."

Those missed votes are going to come up in the campaign.
Many people I speak to see him keeping the senate seat as a safety net in case he loses, much like Lieberman did. Making Kerry seem unconfident and a weaker candidate.

The catch: is it worth losing a senate seat in order to be a stronger candidate?

I've missed quite a few of these over the years. These are the "you're invited, but not required" variety. Essentially, the votes are the same thing if JFK's vote would have made no difference to the outcome. Honestly, yes, I'd prefer he was there, but I'd also rather have a Dem in the White House.

93. True, but the rest of it can be handled from anywhere.
You don't have to be in your local Senatorial office to take care of issues that require a phone call or a visit from a subordinate. You don't have to stand on the Senate floor to make your views known to your colleagues. You don't have to appear in the Capital to co-sponsor (or even sponsor) a bill. The only thing he has to actually be on the floor for are roll-call votes, so that's what I'm using in this argument.

Beyond the votes, what can you point to that Kerry specifically has failed to do as Senator? As you say, there's more to being a Senator, so you must have something...

102. Ah, but it is when the claim is that something can't be done...
and I regularly do that very thing. Telecommunications and teleconferencing have been able to provide the level requires for artificial being there for about a decade. It's actually becomming quite common that people use teleconferencing instead of a physical visit. Therefore it is realistic to claim that Kerry can (and likely does, since he isn't technophobic) teleconference to handle what needs a "face-to-face" unless physical presence (like a roll-call vote) is required.

104. I probably did not phrase that very well. Yes, I know the...
...technology exists as I have seen it at the university many times and have a primitive setup here. It is not the same as face to face and not that great on dealing with a large number of separated people. I am sure Kerry could operate such a system and is not afraid of a computer; he can't make a post to his own website, but he isn't afraid of technology. He probably has access in the Senate for teleconferencing should he choose to do so, but for what he needs to do he needs to be there. If he wants to leave his seat "idle" he needs to forgo the pay, or start being there.

My concern is the republican senate will schedule votes, where Kerry being on the campaign trail will appear to be the reason something failed to pass.
It's already happened. The senate lacked 1 vote to extend unemployment benefits. JFK was campaigning, didn't vote.
Will this come back on him????? Yea about the end of October.
