Desecration amendment making usual rounds
As America prepares to mark another Flag Day today, Congress is preparing for another legislative battle over a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning and other desecration of Old Glory.
<snip>

"All 50 state legislatures have passed resolutions asking Congress to pass the amendment and send it to the states for consideration and ratification," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Judiciary Committee. "Polls have shown that 80 percent of the American people want the opportunity to vote to protect their flag."

With Republicans in control of Congress and largely supporting the amendment, forcing a vote has political appeal. Along with other Democrats in Congress, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the likely Democratic presidential nominee, could be pushed to cast a politically unpopular vote shortly before the election. Amendment advocates believe most voters support their position.
<snip>

Voting along party lines, the constitution subcommittee has approved the amendment 5-4. The full Judiciary Committee is expected to pass it shortly. The amendment has 56 Senate co-sponsors.

What we need is a friggin Constitutional amendment to protect us from the degrading and disgusting flag babble of Congressional gasbags.

1. Yep ... it's an election year!
I swear, if the Flag Desecration Commandment is passed, I'm going to turn in all those barstool patriots who have tattered, filthy flags hanging from their car windows, outside their shops, and on pennants over their used-car lots.

The US Flag Code is all over the internet, on at least a dozen big sites. There's no excuse anymore for the modern flag-waver to claim his own version on desecration is solemn.

13. Good idea!
Yesterday I saw a car drive by with this tattered, ratty-looking flag on the radio antenna. I thought how apropos it was for the white stripes to look like a dingy brown, as white is the color which symbolizes purity; and there is nothing pure about these fascists who would bully the world with their might-makes-right point of view.

2. Don't they have some REAL work
to do? Like impeachment proceedings, or war crimes trials or contempt of congress charges to bring? What a bunch of slackers.

12. Repugs doing what they do best….
Deifying other conservatives (raygun), deifying the flag, deifying “their” god over all others and slamming all that dare speak against…..real work for the people??? Image trumps substance every time….

4. "Polls have shown
that 80 percent of the American people want the opportunity to... protect their flag."

And yet, Military recruitment just doesn't seem to support that statement, does it.

Slackers!

6. If they pass it
I will buy a whole hell of a lot of flags, fly to DC, and burn them in front of the White House the day before it takes effect. I'll save one of them, and burn it at the stroke of midnight.

7. I would support this....
...if they would make it a crime to either physically or metaphorically WRAP YOURSELF in the flag....Or provide for strong penalities for letting your SUV flag get ratty....

9. But, but, but what
what about the flag decorated Bush* golf cart, and the flag decorated pizza boxes and the handy full page poorly printed flag in the local penny saver to be ripped out and pinned or glued to something.
