President Bush will participate in the annual Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery today. After the annual wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns, the president is addressing veterans, families and others in Arlington's Memorial Amphitheater. He'll pay tribute to those who've fought and died in all America's wars.
His presumed Democratic challenger, John Kerry, will head to Portsmouth, Va., to march in the city's 120th annual Memorial Day parade. The Kerry campaign is convinced his background as a decorated Vietnam veteran can help him appeal to voters along the Virginia coast, with its big bases in Portsmouth and Norfolk.
Virginia's been a solidly Republican state in recent elections. But Democrats think recent population shifts have put the state in play, and Kerry's been advertising heavily.
