2 Dead, 20 Hurt in Iraq Car Bomb Blast
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A car bomb exploded Monday near the headquarters of the U.S.-run occupation authority, killing at least two people and injuring more than 20.

The blast occurred on Kindi Street in the city's Harithiyah district, about 500 yards from where the head of the Governing Council, Izzadine Saleem, was assassinated in a car bombing May 17.

U.S. soldiers fired shots in the air to disperse crowds gathering after the blast, which shattered glass in shops and homes across a wide area.

At Yarmouk hospital, Dr. Linna Ziyad said the body of a woman killed in the blast was brought to the morgue. Another body lay in the street, covered by a plastic sheet.

1. updated link
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - As Iraqi politicians jostled for posts in a new government on Monday, a deadly explosion that randomly cut down pedestrians in a busy Baghdad street was a reminder of the security nightmare facing them.

The blast killed at least two Iraqis and wounded more than a dozen. Police at the scene said the office of Iraq (news - web sites)'s prime-minister designate was not far away and speculated that he could have been the intended target.

Colonel Mike Murray, a U.S. officer on the scene, said the target of the attack was not known. He described it as random violence but said it would not derail plans to form an interim government and hand over sovereignty to Iraqis after June 30.

4. It will be Independence day
Children will playfully run through the streets, spreading flower petals in front of their liberators. </sarcasm>
