Now, 500 more district employees are facing layoffs after talks on a buyout offer collapsed Tuesday between administrators and union leaders. The two sides were battling over pay raises.
A 3 percent increase for employees is scheduled to take place in July. The district proposed eliminating the increase to fund buyouts and help with the $100 million deficit. Union leaders countered by offering the money as a loan, but that was not accepted. Board members contend eliminating pay raises would have saved the district more than $20 million. Now the number of laid-off workers is expected to soar from 873 to 1,400.
