Bush Would Carry Indiana In 2004

Bush would win the state of Indiana in the 2004 United States presidential election, according to a poll by the Indianapolis Star and WTHR-TV. 54 per cent of respondents would vote for the Republican incumbent, a 21 per cent lead over prospective Democratic nominee John Kerry.

4. This is the second one of these weird polls I have seen today

the other one was South Dakota I think. Both show some huge lead for bush, in total conflict with the normal polls and common sense. I don't think it's a coincidence.

5. This is not surprising to me.

The Dems could get the entire midwest but they still will not carry that state. It is not major anyway, I would expect bush to win there. Illinois is ours. Michigan and wisconson are most likely ours. Missouri and Ohio are fair game for us.

If that discourages talk of putting Evan Bayh on the ticket, this poll is a very good thing. No Democrat has won there since LBJ and FDR lost it twice too. It's a Republican state in presidential politics.

in a recent NYTimes article which showed the distribution of federal funds, Indiana was one of the few states which was "even" -- as in the amount of money paid and the amount of money taken.

I do not understand why Indiana would vote for Bush, considering the job losses in manufacturing.

But then again, I don't understand a lot of things about Indiana, and am a transplant and wish I could move. The only consolation is that I live in one of the few very liberal places in Indiana.

Examples of non-Southern states that have had a great deal of involvement with the KKK are Indiana and Colorado. According to Rhomberg, “the Klan were frequently more successful where native white Protestants were a majority” (1). This was especially true for Indiana. Indiana is a landlocked state and was not one of the major destinations of immigrants coming to the United States. Indiana was predominantly Southern-populated, and in the 1920s there were very few Catholics, Jews, blacks, or immigrants (Wade 218). However, despite the fact that there was not a large Catholic population, Indiana was extremely anti-Catholic. This strongly felt sentiment stemmed from many of the examples listed previously: the fact that many immigrants are Catholic, the belief that Catholics were unpatriotic and un-American, and – absurdly enough – the quiet fear that the Pope had some secret plan to take over the state of Indiana and convert everybody to Catholicism. This hatred and fear was all that people needed, and with a persuasive and charming Klan leader and a strong recruitment policy, the KKK in Indiana grew enormously. By the end of 1923, Klan members accounted for ten percent of the population (Wade 218).

... Indianapolis in the `60s in a white Cadillac with the Klan emblem painted on the door.

When I was there in 1967-8, it was the only city in the country with a 57% black population and a white mayor and an all-white city council.

That may be subdued and under the surface now, but racism and segregation was a de facto reality in Indianapolis then. I suspect that, in later years, that and religious fundamentalism have cemented a belief in the average Indianan in the "smaller government, less government, states' rights" meme that is just current-day code for racism. Just track the changes over time by the differences between Birch Bayh and Evan Bayh.

I grew up in rural Indiana, a lone Catholic boy in a small town. In the 1960 election John Kennedy received three votes in our precinct. My Mom, My Dad, and an obvious mistake.

The real number to look at in this survey is not that Bush would win but that he has only 54%.

For Bush to have just over half of Indiana voters saying they will voter for him is very telling. I think many of those undecideds are going Kerry's way. It will be much closer than that.

I am loudly proudly liberal in NE Indiana, not far from the Dane Quayle Memoriale Museume and in my conversations with former true believers see the support for Bush getting squishier and squirmier day by day. People are NOT liking what they are seeing and can offer no real defense of it.

I agree the Bush "support" is squeamish at best. These are rabid repubs that I was fishing with and visiting with. I have never heard softer "support". Not even during the worst of Watergate was Nixon's support so weak. Hell he could have had asylum in Indiana if he needed it.
