RENTON -- Officials are asking airlines not to refuel their planes at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, after a weekend explosion shut down the 400-mile pipeline system that delivers the airport's jet fuel.

"We've asked the airlines to, when possible, fly in here with enough fuel on board to get to their next destination," airport spokesman Bob Parker said Monday. "We think we have enough fuel on site to get us through late afternoon or early evening on Wednesday."

... Between 3,300 and 10,000 gallons of fuel leaked from the three-quarter-inch line, with much of it burning, Olympic president and district manager Bobby Talley said Monday. The cause of the explosion was under investigation.

... As a precaution, company officials shut down the entire system following Sunday's explosion. Talley said Monday that his best estimate was that it would remain shut down for days.

3. It seems like this went entirely unreported Sunday
I found two articles in regional papers from today about it, but nothing otherwise. Not on DU, either.

11. must be "small stainless-steel test line that runs off the main pipeline"
12 million gallons a day has to be a lot bigger than 3/4"

7. Isn't this the same company that owned the one in Bellingham
that exploded a few years ago, killing three kids? If so, I remember that it has some connection to Cheney somewhere along the line.

10. I haven't heard a word about this, anywhere! WTF is going on? And
weren't some Texas DU'ers saying there were some problems with refineries or something to do with oil/gas having explosions but it wasn't being reported just a week or so ago?

12. I think this wastes about 25% of the fuel for the next flight..because
lifting the extra weight (of 'tankered' fuel) burns fuel. And/or it means less payload (cargo and passengers) -- in other words, less efficient.

Bad for the environment, bad for the airlines.
