UK govt leaked memo 'to show independence'
London, , May. 24 (UPI) -- The British government deliberately leaked an internal memo revealing its private unease with U.S. strategy in Iraq, opposition Conservatives said Monday.

"The timing is extraordinarily convenient for the government," a Conservative official told United Press International about the memo, published by the London Sunday Times.

The memo suggests Britain is uneasy about "heavy-handed" U.S. military tactics and disagrees with U.S. policy on how much power the post-handover Iraqi government should have. It adds that the Abu Gharib torture scandal has undermined the "moral authority" of the occupation.
