Air America calls for its cash lifeline (New Infusion of Cash)
http://www.nydailynews.com/05-24-2004/entertainment/story/196256p-169526c.html

Air America, the progressive talk network heard locally on WLIB (1190 AM), says it has a new infusion of cash to keep the wheels on the track.

It's coming from a group that includes Sheldon Drobney, the Chicago entrepreneur who first conceived the idea of a new radio network to counter the conservatives. Drobney is informally seen as the "white knight" who can stabilize an operation that suddenly has begun to look shaky.

<snip>

On the brighter side, it has signed up some new affiliates - and it's also true that all media startups have shakeouts in the early going. What gets them through is the confidence of listeners, supporters and advertisers that this new entity has the resources and will to keep going.

1. Everybody Ante-Up !!!
I would be perfectly willing to kick in to keep them on the air. Maybe they could do an internet access subscription thing, preferably voluntary for those who could afford it. Does anyone have the ear of the folks who run Air America ?Talk to them, and see what can be done. I think it would be a terrible loss if they went down.

9. Buy their merchandise

That's the first way to help them. I think a better way may be going public and releasing common stock (not preferred stock). Common stock will shield Air America from a right-wing takeover.

What they are doing is quite agressive. They have created a 24-hour network from SCRATCH. They probably got reamed in the whole "multi-cultural broadcasting" thing.

I'm betting they're over the barrel in Los Angelos and Chicago now. There are probably some willing station owners, but they know they can drive a hard bargain. The extra money is probably to get new affiliates in these markets.

George Soros, please help Air America!!!!!!

12. I'd kick in if it switched to "listener supported radio"
instead of commercial radio.

It'd be in the company of greats like NPR and Pacifica.

19. Where's Moveon.org?
All we need to do is get Moveon.org to take care of the collecting the money. I am will to donate and I am sure there are man more . Actually Moveon.org should expand their presence into the airwaves and buy out Air America.

all the DU t-shirts have the DU logo on the back. I don't mind the DU logo being on there..but i would prefer it was much smaller or something. I just don't care for the look of having a logo on the back. Oh well. WOnder if i could just get cafeshops to print me one of the non copywrited ideas.

8. The audience is THERE, and always has been
Maybe, just maybe CNN will take the hint. Instead of being Fox News Junior, they can get money and ratings by "going liberal"! At the very least, maybe they can get Mike Malloy on after 6AM. When is Gore's station going on the air, by the way?

10. We'll see how the Gore News Network does ...

It's not going to be "left wing". It's going to be the network Edward R Murrah would have made if he could.

In a sense though, it is kinda "left wing". Because they're the only one's who seem to care about the facts anymore.

14. It's not Murrah....
It's Edward R. Murrow. Murrah is the name of the Federal building in OKC that was destroyed by Timothy McVeigh in 1995.

15. God Bless the Drobnys
They are friends of Gore and extremely decent progressive folks!

We all owe them a debt of gratitude. I suspect the Drobnys will finance Air America through the election to help America defeat Bush.

Thank you!

16. Air America
I always listen to it nowdays.

I love how I heard some right wing conservatives say that it
is on shaky ground and losing support.
I fired back and said, it is gaining support it will take a year
to get higher listener levels.
Look at the TV show MASH, it almost was cancelled the first season
and look at what happened.

17. somewhere to send our $$$$
I listened to Al's show today, in which he interviewed Richard Morrison, running in Texas's District 22 against Tom DeLay. Al was really enthused about Mr. Morrison's chances of beating DeLay. Wouldn't it be absloutely stellar if we were finally rid of Tom Delay??? Al said he would add a link to Morrison's website from www.OFrankenFactor.com, so we could all go read about the good fight Morrison is waging, so why don't we all send a campaign donation, even if we don't live in TX???? His website is www.RichardMorrisonForDistrict22.com. I'm mailing in the morning.

20. They didn't
It's a common radio gimick. You scan through the numbers until you find one that works - then you hype it.

In this case, it's for one demographic in one timeslot that includes two or three hours where the oxyfraud is not even on the air.

The overall numbers were pretty blah - but improving.

21. Jeez, you people are generous.
You're going to give a for-profit company money? That's what I call angel investing. I'd love it if they sold some shares, though.
