Malawi leader to be sworn in despite riots
Blantyre - Bingu wa Mutharika, a former World Bank economist, was set to be sworn in as Malawi's new president on Monday after riots triggered by opposition claims that last week's election was rigged.

The outcome of the poll, which was criticised by foreign observers, could prove to be an obstacle to donor aid which the impoverished southern African nation badly needs as it struggles with food shortages and an Aids pandemic.

But the streets of the commercial capital Blantyre, where the inauguration ceremony was to begin at 10am, were calm on Monday morning after angry township residents rioted the night before in protest against Mutharika's election win.

If Bush and the Republican Party and the Supreme Court can cheat in America it has shown the world the path to chaos.
