BAGHDAD, May 24 (Reuters) - A loud explosion sounded on Monday inside the sprawling Baghdad compound housing the U.S.-led administration and a plume of smoke rose into the air, witnesses and soldiers inside the compound said.

The blast shook buildings inside the "Green Zone" compound, which comes under regular rocket and mortar attack.

An explosion killed four foreigners when it destroyed their bullet-proof 4x4 near an entrance to coalition headquarters in Baghdad today.

Security sources in the Iraqi capital said the car belonged to a private security company and was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

American soldiers tried to pull the men from the shattered car, and quickly sealed off the area, said witness Kamel Raji. The blast occurred about 50 yards from the Assassins Gate” one of the main entrances to the Green Zone.

US army Colonel John Murray said the military was trying to identify the nationalities of the victims. He confirmed four deaths, and said an American medical unit was treating two injured people. He said the car had armour plating.

Policeman Mohammed Naem, who saw the car explode, said the vehicle was a bullet-proof Toyota Land Cruiser that was on its way to the convention centre in the Green Zone.

About an hour later, at least two explosions were heard in central Baghdad, and smoke rose from the vicinity of the Green Zone.

7. "Foreigner"
Interesting that we refer to them as "foreigners" when they are not Amurkin. I guess Iraq has officially become the 51st state.

Here you go. Another bad one.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=540&e=1&u=/ap/20040524/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An explosion destroyed a car near an entrance to the headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition Monday, killing four people, the military said. An Iraqi policeman said they were foreigners.

About an hour later, at least two blasts were heard elsewhere in central Baghdad, and smoke rose from the vicinity of the Green Zone, which houses the coalition headquarters. A coalition spokeswoman said she heard the blasts, but had no information on the cause.

In the car explosion, American soldiers tried to pull the men from the shattered vehicle and quickly sealed off the area, said witness Kamel Raji. The blast occurred about 50 yards from one of the main entrances to the Green Zone.

U.S. Army Col. John Murray said the explosion occurred about 2 p.m. and that the military was trying to identify the nationalities of the victims. He confirmed four deaths and said an American medical unit was treating two injured people. He said the car had armor plating.
