US, Britain to present Iraq resolution to UN on Monday
UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The United States and Britain will Monday present the UN Security Council with the first draft of a resolution on Iraq (news - web sites), diplomats on the council told AFP.
The two allies have been meeting with the other 13 council nations over the past few weeks to hash out the broad outlines of the measure, which will recognise the new Iraqi government set to take power on June 30.
The resolution will also clear the way for foreign forces to remain in the country after the formal end of the occupation on that date.
But it was not immediately clear what its full content would be.
The United States would like to secure the UN Security Council to put a stamp of approval on any new Iraqi government as well as invite troops from more countries to the US-led stabilization effort.
UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is curently trying to put together an interim government for Iraq that will assume power on June 30, when the Coalition Provisional Authority will officially cease to exist.
It is uncertain if Washington and London would be able to win legal immunity for troops in Iraq, a question which has become crucial since the damaging revelations of abuse of Iraqi prisoners by the US military
