Pew Survey Finds Moderates, Liberals Dominate News Outlets
By E & P Staff

Published: May 23, 2004 4:00 PM EST

NEW YORK Those convinced that liberals make up a disproportionate share of newsroom workers have long relied on Pew Research Center surveys to confirm this view, and they will not be disappointed by the results of Pew's latest study released today.

While most of the journalists, like many Americans, describe themselves as "moderate," a far higher number are "liberal" than in the general population.

At national organizations (which includes print, TV and radio), the numbers break down like this: 34% liberal, 7% conservative. At local outlets: 23% liberal, 12% conservative. At Web sites: 27% call themselves liberals, 13% conservatives.

This contrasts with the self-assessment of the general public: 20% liberal, 33% conservative.

2. If they really believe this is true...
then maybe they should think about the fact that after these people actually "see" what is going on in the world, they become more liberal.

7. I'd like to see a break out
"talent" vs. "workers". Management vs. "workers" That survey smells. They do have a management breakout later - which proves they could've disaggregated should they wanted to. Hmmmm.

9. More than half the "newsroom workers" are self-described moderates?
Since when did self-description mean jack shit in reality? Hell, Bill O'Reilly could call himself a moderate. Neal Boortz could call himself a moderate. Silly.

Did they poll these people on the issues, too?

10. So what:? I was an Atheist working in a holy-roller TV station...
Didn't mean I was allowed to set the editorial policy.
I considered myself the lowest form of Whore in that era.

Naw, wasn't my fault, that was during the Reagan years. Lots of people were whoring to eat.

12. They're probably right - but it's not the journalists who set the tone -
it's the people who own the newspapers or networks or radio stations that decide what tone will be taken.

15. SIMPLE EXPLANATION!!
Conservatives have not identified themselves as such in the survey, in order to skew it for their purposes!!

Simple, isn't it?

Can't have that old myth dispelled!

19. The liberals are the ones jumping out windows at the NYT, right?
Because their editors won't let them tell the truth, perhaps.

20. I notice they do not give any particular
standards for liberal vs conservative, but rely on 'self described.' What a setup for a rigged study!! I'm really conservative, but for purposes of this report I think I'll call myself a liberal.

21. The right would not want the real truth to get out...
they prefer to keep using the word liberal as propaganda. Just because of the policy, at the moment, with this administration on it's way down the rabbit hold is anyone telling a little of the truth.

In which case, who cares if the coffee boy gofers are liberal?
