"America's credibility in Iraq `hanging by a thread'"

New iraqi Poll just out. bad news for us all
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0405230340may23,1,3362979.story?coll=chi-newsnationworld-hed

88% of Iraqis view us as the problem, not the solution. Only 7% think we are there doing a good job and want us to stay.

Most think we are liers, cheats, abusers and killers. The recent 45 dead at the wedding did not help.

These figures come from today's print edition, Chicago Tribune.

Shall we guess how president shrub will spin this in his off the b ike speech tomorrow?

We are succeeding!
Mission Accomplished!
Stay the Course!
We know best about what the Iraqis want!
God talked to me, and said, ignore the facts. Stay on this path of self-ritgheousness and autolobotimization ! Keep riding!

I refuse to sign up for chitrib invasion of privacy crap just to get their web edition.

That was why I failed to give a link. Next time, I'll use a source that has free and unfettered access.

Anyone wanna guess what our feckless leader will say tomorrow in view of these polls?

10. Hi lil-petunia
You might want to change your thread title to the title of the article: "America's credibility in Iraq `hanging by a thread'" before it's locked by the moderators. Also note (in your post) that the article requires registration at the Chicago Trib website.:hi:

Anyhow, here's the meat of it:
<snip>
The graphic footage of mutilated children killed in what Iraqis say was a U.S. attack on a wedding party, the assassination of the Iraqi Governing Council president and the continued flow of photos depicting abuse of Iraqi prisoners have shredded America's already battered credibility in the eyes of many Iraqis.

According to a new public opinion poll conducted for the U.S. authority in Baghdad, 88 percent of Iraqis now say they regard the Americans as occupiers, and only 7 percent view them as liberators.

The Iraqis surveyed ranked the departure of U.S. forces as their third most important priority, behind security and jobs but ahead of democratization, the formation of a new government and reconstruction of the country's infrastructure, said Sadoun al Dulame, a pollster who heads the Iraq Center for Research and Strategic Studies. His group took the poll of 1,640 Iraqis, who were questioned in face-to-face interviews in seven cities two weeks ago, and says there is a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
</snip>

And, welcome to DU! :hi:

11. ...a bit more:
:grr::grr::grr::grr::grr:

<snip>
Seen as part of the problem

"It means the coalition forces are now seen as part of the problem, not the solution," al Dulame said. "America's credibility in Iraq is hanging by a thread of 7 percent."

On the streets of Baghdad, the disillusionment that set in months ago is turning into a form of loathing, fueled not only by the recent bad news but also by the day-to-day indignities and upsets of life under an occupation.

For Zeinab Kareem, 33, the reports that U.S. helicopters had killed 41 people attending a wedding party in western Iraq were convincing, despite American denials. Only the day before, Kareem said, U.S. soldiers had opened fire on her aunt's funeral procession as it tried to cross U.S. lines into the besieged city of Najaf. She said three of her relatives were killed, though U.S. officials could not confirm that.

15. The phrase "hanging by a thread" regarding US credibility...
is ridiculous, imo. When only 7% see the US as liberators, there is NO credibility to be had. No one believes ANYTHING the US admin says now except the rabid right wing sycophants.

18. Bullshit Headline!
We never had any credibility to begin with in the Iraq invasion. 200 million people around the world knew that and went into their streets to oppose the action. The vast majority of DUers knew there was no credibility and expressed it here in thousands of threads.

As Will Pitt so simply points out, every excuse that the Regime has offered up for this war has turned out to be bogus.

This is purely The War To Make Dick Cheney Rich.

21. Iraqi wishful thinking quote
"It may seem hopeless, but I believe there is enough wisdom in America not to allow this accumulation of mistakes to bring us to a tragedy."

There was not enough wisdom to keep another Bush out of the White House and, with a little help from their friends at Diebold, there probably will not be enough wisdom to kick this one out.

I fervently hope I am wrong. But any Iraqis who think there is a whole lot of wisdom left in this country is deluded. Cruelty, bigotry, xenophobia and barbarity, yes. Wisdom, no.

23. Faux Nudes
was announcing how the Iraqi people were falling behind the US effort to "clean up" Sadr's strongholds.
Somehow this poll info just doesn't register - not when it conflicts with their fairly unbalanced reporting.

Anyone wanna bet that our leader will not mention this AT ALL? and instead state, that the Iraqi people are behind our effort and want us to "stay the course"?

24. When I heard of this poll, reports said "a majority in Iraq want US gone"
but no published report ever gives the percentage for that question, only the 88% number. I find that so odd (translation: they're hiding something?)

I think it's important because older polls said a majority saw us as an occupier (albeit a smaller majority) BUT a majority wanted us to stay. That last number was what you heard reported over and over by the propaganda machine. Now they won't even tell us what that number is.

If anyone sees the percentage of Iraqis who want us to leave now, please post it. Since its been shoved down our throats forever it is important to know to shut up the freaks at work.

28. 57 percent
Sorry I can't give a link. But I downloaded the web page on April 29:

Poll: Iraqis out of patience

USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll.

By Khalid Mohammed, AP

The nationwide survey, the most comprehensive look at Iraqi attitudes toward the occupation, was conducted in late March and early April. It reached nearly 3,500 Iraqis of every religious and ethnic group.

<snip>

But while they acknowledge benefits from dumping Saddam a year ago,
Iraqis no longer see the presence of the American-led military as aplus. Asked whether they view the U.S.-led coalition as "liberators"or "occupiers," 71% of all respondents say "occupiers."

<snip>

The growing negative attitude toward the Americans is also reflectedin two related survey questions: 53% say they would feel less secure without the coalition in Iraq, but 57% say the foreign troops shouldleave anyway. Those answers were given before the current showdowns in Fallujah and Najaf between U.S. troops and guerrilla fighters.

32. That is an optimistic assessment
Imperial credibility never existed. It "died" the day the Imperial Family decided to finally stop pussyfooting around and start working out in the open to destroy America so that the remnants could be seized, stolen, and oppressed to keep the Filthy Little Nobodies (that's us) quiet.

American Credibility
BORN: July 4, 1776
DIED: Dec. 12th, 2000

The Old American Republic
BORN: July 4, 1776

That's NO coincidence.

33. Training Wheels

Recall his racist and insensitive statement about the training wheels. How can he keep saying these things that make matters far worse?

Congress needs to do MORE to get this gang impeached.
At first I thought that we needed to focus on the election instead of impeachment for Bush. NOw I am leaning the other way. Each second these thugs dig us deeper into trouble with the world.

Charles Rangel has started the ball rolling on Rumsfeld -- hurry Charlie, do your duty!!!
