Civilian Interpreter at Abu Ghraib Fired
GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- A civilian interpreter named as a suspect in the abuse of Abu Ghraib prisoners has been fired, but his wife said he has not left Iraq.

Adel L. Nakhla worked for Titan Corp. as an Arabic translator at the prison near Baghdad. He told Army investigators he was present during some of the abuses, including the now-infamous human pyramid of naked, hooded detainees, at the prison near Baghdad.

An Army report by Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba names Nakhla as a suspect in the Army Criminal Investigation Division's criminal investigation of the abuses at the prison.

It is unclear whether Nakhla, 49, could face criminal charges. He has hired a lawyer.

5. I don't wish rape on anyone
The conditions of our own prisons with regard to rape is an international disgrace. Of course, these conditions exist in all prisons, from Le Sante in Paris, to the Butyrka detention center in Moscow, to the England's Broadmoor, to Attica, Angola, and Huntsville, but that's no reason to joke about it, or wish it on people.

Rape is not a punishment in civilized societies. It is a crime, no matter where, or to whom, it is committed.

6. He was one of three who refused to testify... [link]
3 Witnesses at Iraq Abuse Hearing Refused to Testify:

"The last prosecution witness to plead the 5th was Adel L. Nakhla, a U.S. civilian contractor employed by Titan Corp. and working as a translator in Baghdad. According to a transcript of the Graner hearing, Nakhla "elected not to participate in the proceedings and was excused.""

"You can't assert it unless you have a belief that there is some criminal exposure," he said. "That's why people do it."

Fidell said he had never heard of a case where every prosecution witness called to the stand refused to testify, but then said, "I can't say I know of any case that is like this one either." He added: "People take the 5th out of an abundance of caution. People are aware of their right not to incriminate themselves. That's been hard-wired into military justice for several decades."

9. If this is the person said to have raped the Iraqi boy, notice the spin
All of the earlier stories called him an "Iraqi translator", as far as I recall. To me, this conjures up images of a local person hired to translate for the U.S. army, who turned out to be a sadist. Contrast that with the statement below:

"Nakhla and his wife, Nadine, have owned a two-story town house in this Washington suburb since 1989. The home had red, white and blue ribbons hanging from the storm door and outside light on Friday."

So, we are actually talking about an exile who had been in the U.S. for at least 15 years, possibly longer, working for Titan Corp., an interrogation contractor. In other words, at best what has been referred to as a contractor, at worst what has been referred to as a mercenary. I am sure Iraqis would use the latter description.

There is even some question of what country he was originally from:

"One of the abused prisoners identified an interpreter called "Abu Adel the Egyptian" as one of the men who stacked the prisoners on top of each other, according to a statement obtained by The Washington Post."
