Lady Liberty hooded in political ad

<< Lady Liberty hooded in political ad
By Mark Memmott, USA TODAY

A hooded Statue of Liberty, meant to remind viewers of Iraqis abused by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, dominates a TV ad that an anti-Bush organization will begin airing nationally next week.

MoveOn.org, a national grassroots organization, and the new ad's makers defend the imagery they used.

"There's nothing inappropriate about making sure Americans know about the scandal," said Peter Schurman, MoveOn.org's executive director. "It's the most patriotic thing we could do at this point."

"We didn't put images from 9/11 into our ads," as the Bush-Cheney campaign did in one of its first spots, said Pacy Markman, a partner in the ad making firm Zimmerman and Markman, which produced the MoveOn.org spot. "When it comes to exploitation we take a back seat to the Bush campaign."

But even before it is on the air, the ad is drawing protests from the Bush-Cheney campaign.

The spot "disgraces one of America's most enduring national symbols," Bush-Cheney spokesman Stephen Schmidt said Friday. "It's indicative of a trend in the Democratic Party and among John Kerry's surrogates to blame America first." >>

Blame America for the torture by US soldiers?

Who would they rather have us blame for it?

France?

17. "Blame America First" is the Bush Campaign's flagship phrase
Get used to it. When you blame Bush, they're going to come back with "Why do you blame America first?" and follow that up with "Why do you hate America?" - the implication here being that Bush IS America.

It's the republican talking point of the summer season, possibly be used all the way to the election.

3. "Blame America first??" You're damn RIGHT I blame 'em for the torture.
And Schmidt can kiss my liberal ass. I'm so fucking tired of the refusal of ANYBODY in this arrogant, fucked up, megalomaniacal administration to take responsibility for anything they do!

GOOD. I'm GLAD it's controversial. That means it'll get tons of news coverage, and far more people will see the ad than if the republicans had just kept their stupid mouths shut. Bring it on, motherfuckers.

15. Right, BushCo is the root of this evil
Their corrupt policy is corrupting the youth of our nation causing our sons and daughters to commit crimes against humanity.

Yes, always blame BushCo first.

16. No, they do this in OUR name.
That's why I'm so angry and so heartbroken. This is being done in our name--the rest of the world does not distinguish between America and Bush, or between democrats and republicans.

4. Hey, remember France?
The spot "disgraces one of America's most enduring national symbols," Bush-Cheney spokesman Stephen Schmidt said Friday. "It's indicative of a trend in the Democratic Party and among John Kerry's surrogates to blame America first."

They sure as heck weren't saying that when FRANCE, that's right, when FRANCE didn't want to back us on that war and the Repubs said come take the statue away and had all sorts of cartoons making fun of it. What F*^#ers the GOPers are. My head's going to explode.

5. Do I blame America?
You bet I do. These soldiers were committing these abuses in the uniform of, under the banner of, and in the name of the United States of America.

An ad targeted towards intellectuals is a waste of money. Only educated people will be impressed by this imagry.
The people who are less educated, those who we desparately need to reach, will most definitely not respond well to this ad. It will just appear to be defacating treatment of Lady Liberty.
Move on needs to strategize a little better.

This should remind people that the Bush cabal were responsible for the prison abuses (if they haven't been paying attention).

23. An enduring national symbol from the French. Who I think warned
Bu$h Inc. that attacking Iraq was a war crime. But no we had to demonize the French and attack Iraq anyway. It is the statue of liberty. And we are liberating the Iraqi people by murdering them. Her face should be cover. My misguided country`s idea of liberty is a disgrace.
