Bush in bid to calm Congress
President George Bush has made a rare trip to Capitol Hill to reassure Republicans worried about Iraq, infighting over next year's budget and November's election.

In a 45-minute pep talk on Thursday, Mr Bush told more than 200 House and Senate Republicans that the US was committed to transferring power to the Iraqis on June 30 and insisted that the temporary Government would not be under American control.

US troops shelled Shiite militia in the holy city of Karbala during six hours of heavy fighting yesterday that left several people dead. In Baghdad, US commanders strongly defended a missile strike near the Syrian border this week that reportedly killed 41 people.

They said they believed they had hit a hideaway for foreign fighters, and not a wedding party as claimed by Iraqis there.

3. oh please
does any of them think he has any influence or any ability at all? He had to appear before the 9/11 panel with Cheney as his puppetmaster.

Does that not make some sort of impression on, even, Republicans.

Maybe not. Maybe they are all as stupid as Bush.

4. I need a history lesson
I can't ever recall the President of the US going to the hill for a special talk exclusively with the house and senate members of his party.

GWB the Uniter my ass!
