Justice Department opens prison abuse inquiry into contractor

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Justice Department said it has started a criminal investigation into the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by a civilian contractor.

The Defense Department refered the case to the Justice Department Thursday, department spokesman Mark Corallo said in a statement.

"Yesterday, the Department of Justice received a referral from the Department of Defense regarding a civilian contractor in Iraq, and opened an investigation into the matter," said the statement.

"We remain committed to taking all appropriate action within our jurisdiction regarding allegations of mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners."

The statement gave no other detail and said no other comment would be made.
