US demands war crimes immunity
The US is seeking to renew the immunity from prosecution enjoyed by American peacekeepers, with a resolution before the UN Security Council.

SNIP

Washington negotiated special dispensation when the International Criminal Court came into being two years ago, arguing that as the world's only superpower, it might be subject to spurious or malicious prosecutions.

The US secured the UN's agreement by threatening to veto all its peacekeeping operations.

SNIP

The matter was due for discussion at the Security Council in New York on Friday.

But the vote has been delayed until Monday at the request of the Chinese UN ambassador, who is awaiting instructions from Beijing on how to vote.

So we are gonna go after the soldiers who committed this act, but our higher ranking officials and now our government is going to shirk any responsibility?

I'm embarassed.

7. Last year's abstentions
Need to turn into this year's No's. It's time for the US to start playing by the same rules as everyone else.

It reminds me of the middle ages, when priests were immune from prosecutions in the civil courts and could only be disciplined by the Church's ecclesiastical courts.

The Ultimate Bravado!
We're asking the UN to exempt us from the tribunals, probably threatening to withhold money or participation in Peace-keeping operations, and then we're going to ask them (through another resolution, to bail our butts out in Iraq?

Gotta hand it to these bushies....they've got nerve!

8. No Immunity for War Criminals
They no longer need to worry about spurious or malicious prosecutions. There are plenty of real crimes that they've committed in the last two years that we don't have to make anything up.

Kofi Annan needs to grow a backbone and let them know that a US Veto doesn't mean shit anymore. The US needs the UN right now, more than they need us.

11. Maybe the French or Germans can do us a favor
And block it. I'm sure this is something the American people would like it this time.

13. It would be an immense favor
And who gives a damn if the American people, as directed by the American media, like it or don't? The question is what's right or wrong. Get the picture?

10. Sounds like a "superpower" abusing its power.
And KNOWING that it is abusing its power in a world that sought common human decency, dignity and respect.

Perhaps, we are proving ourselves undeserving of "superpower" status.

Once upon a time, we were the beacon,...the light of hope and peace and prosperity. Now, we are living under the shadow of greed and arrogance out of control.
