TAIPEI - Taiwan, expecting Beijing to hear President Chen Shui-bian's inauguration address on Thursday first before making any moves, was caught off-guard by the strongly worded statement issued late on Sunday.

The stock market tumbled 294.36 points or 5.1 per cent to close at a nine-month low of 5,482.96. Jittery traders and punters dumped their holdings, resulting in more than 900 counters in all eight major sectors closing lower, stock analysts said.
