Taiwan bemoans 'health apartheid' at WHO
By Peter Capella

Geneva - The 192 World Health Organisation member states opened their annual assembly on Monday, with a heavy agenda dominated by a renewed drive against HIV and Aids, the threat of new infectious diseases and the growing impact of lifestyle on health.

As the week-long meeting began, Taiwan renewed its controversial bid for observer status at the WHO and warned that its exclusion was leaving a gaping hole in global attempts to prevent the emergence of deadly new diseases.

"We're totally left out of this system. Once there's avian flu, pandemic flu or SARS, Taiwan is totally isolated. We call this a health apartheid," Taiwan's health minister Chen Chien-Jen said.

Taiwan has been hit by outbreaks of both diseases and says it suffered from a slow response to the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiraoty Syndrome last year because of its relative isolation.
