DIWANIYAH, Iraq (AFP) - US troops in central Iraq (news - web sites) are battling to convince locals that Moqtada Sadr is the enemy and everything will improve once the radical Shiite cleric and his militia are defeated.


But they face an uphill struggle, with residents, wary of the US military presence, insisting the democracy the Americans want to instill entitles them to support him.


In the dusty city of Diwaniyah, 180 kilometers (110 miles) south of Baghdad, residents appear far more concerned with the lack of jobs and the acute power shortages than the battle against Sadr's Mehdi Army.


Since they arrived two weeks ago, soldiers of the US Army's 1st Armored Division have been patroling the city to hunt down militiamen and to convince locals they need to do their bit in defeating the anti-coalition force.

It's pathetic and hilarious when US military propaganda calls different Iraqi groups "anti-Iraqi." It's kind of like if the Soviets had taken over the US during the '80s and were calling resisters "anti-American." Think of that horrible movie "Red Dawn."
