Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry on Friday collected the endorsement of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, a police union that backed President Bush in the 2000 election.

``After three and a half years of disappointing leadership under George Bush, we need to change course in November and elect a president with a real record of supporting police officers and a lifetime of standing with law enforcement,'' IBPO President David Holway said in a statement provided by the Kerry campaign.

The union endorsed Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996. Kerry scheduled a round-table discussion with members of the group on Friday to talk about law enforcement issues.

20. I'd say it definitely is!
Hey, I'd say this one's an ENORMOUS plumb for Kerry to have plucked...he's got the AFL-CIO, he's got the Firefighters' Union, and now he's got a major police officers' union. I can see the commercials for him now, with firemen and police officers giving testimonials as to why they're going to vote for Kerry this November. Especially those who'll say "I voted for pResident Bush last time, but he let us down. This year I'm going with John Kerry!":D

12. here's more background:
More Cops Endorse Kerry: Reflects John Kerry's Strong Anti-Crime Record, Bush's Failures to Support Law Enforcement, Says Campaign

(Kerry Campaign Press Release)

JOHN KERRY HAS STOOD BY POLICE OFFICERS:

John Kerry Led the Fight for Additional 100,000 Police Officers on America's Streets. John Kerry led the fight to add 100,000 police to our streets through his work on the 1994 crime bill and its Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program. Kerry personally pushed the Clinton White House, the Justice Department, and members of Congress to obtain funding for the 100,000 cops program. Kerry "persuaded the Senate and the Clinton White House to finance a campaign pledge to put 100,000 more police officers on the street." (Boston Globe, 6/21/03; S.Amdt. 1202 to S 1607, 11/16/03; Reason Magazine. 3/94)

Kerry Worked With Law Enforcement Officials to Ban Military- Style Assault Weapons. John Kerry has strongly supported the current ban on machine guns and assault weapons-including AK-47's and similar weapons used by terrorists in Afghanistan. Police organizations including IBPO strongly support extension of the current ban. (RC 375, S Amdt. 1152 to S Amdt. 1151 to S 1607, 11/17/93; Orange County Register, 3/2/04)

Kerry is a National Leader in Working to Ban "Cop Killer Bullets." John Kerry is a national leader in promoting sensible oversight of ammunition sales which have no sporting value yet risk the lives of police officers. Kerry has strongly supported measures to crack down on armor-piecing, "cop killer" bullets. (S. 553, 4/10/97; S. 433, 2/16/95; RC 240, S Amdt. 3351 to S. 2312, 7/28/98; RC 116, S Amdt. 343 to S 254, 5/13/99)

As a County Prosecutor, Kerry Fought Crime and Put Away Murderers and Mob Bosses. John Kerry was the first assistant prosecutor of Middlesex County (one of the largest counties in the country) and won convictions in high profile murder, rape and mafia cases. Kerry led the prosecutor's office in a major modernization. "He launched initiatives that were innovative at the time: special units to prosecute white-collar and organized crime, programs to counsel rape victims and aid other crime victims and witnesses, and a system for fast-tracking priority cases to trial" and "is credited with reducing the backlog of cases." (Boston Globe, 6/18/03; Washington Post, 2/21/85)

15. Don't forget to rate this yahoo story and pic! If you've never done
this just go down to the bottom of the story and look for:

Ratings
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

A '5' would help the story stay alive.

'Franken' the picture. 'Franken' is a new word I've created in the American English language. Along with 'Franken Head' the anti of Ditto Head. That would be the moral 'Franken Heads' opposed to the immoral Ditto Heads.

16. Tee hee, looks like only the EX-commissioners of the NYC
police and fire depts are supporting the Texas Turd:

"...In a statement provided by the Bush campaign, a former New York City police commissioner said Bush has provided unprecedented support for first responders, including $13 billion to state and local governments to prepare for terrorism.

"The president has given law enforcement the tools to do their job in the Patriot Act, while John Kerry attacks the law on the campaign trail," former commissioner Bernard Kerik said..."

LMAO!! Bernard Kerik (NYPD) and Thomas von Essen (FDNY) !! If I understand correctly, they were not exactly beloved by the rank-and-file folks during their tenures, even less after 9/11.

Now all Kerry needs is the support of the military (it's up for grabs, despite all the bullshit going 'round), and he's got himself a TRIFECTA that's mighty tough to beat.

25. This is an important endorsement for Kerry, good job!
Most real conservatives (not fanatical right wingers) have some respect for the police and firemen. It won't change any hardcore Bush supporter's minds, but it will probably have some influence with the all important swing voters, even the ones that lean conservative.

29. Well this future cop..
is voting for Kerry. The money for terrorism fighting is bullshit. The basic street level cop doesn't deal with that shit. That's mostly a Federal LE thing. Republicans want to downsize government which includes cops, so I never figured out why cops vote Republican. I wonder what percentage of cops vote Republican which vote for Dems.

The Patriot Act as an issue with cops could go either way. The most basic level street cop is not gonna be using the Patriot Act on a daily basis, probably more of an issue with Federal LE than state/local. Most cops I know have families of five kids struggling to make ends meet, bitch about shitty equipment and pay so Kerry is definitely the man to deliver that.

My little tid-bit: Kids now-a-days have got it made! There's no way in the world these cops could run and catch the kids! (see pic on link.) I think I would have turned out to be a member of the Bush Crime Family if the cops were like this when I was a kid.
